Who manufactures Pedigree?
Pedigree is made by Mars Incorporated and their pet division. In the U.S. this division is called Mars Petcare and is headquartered in Franklin, Tennessee. Pedigree products in the U.S. are made at various factories including factories in Kansas, Arkansas, and Missouri, to name a few. Pedigree is one of the top-selling dog food brands in the U.S. and Mars is one of the big four pet food companies globally (the others being Nestle-Purina, Proctor & Gamble, and Colgate-Palmolive). These companies are thought to control about 80 percent of the world-wide pet food market.

Pedigree Reviews
Pedigree produces nine dry dog foods, along with 16 wet products and 10 different kinds of treats. Their kibbles include Pedigree Adult, Pedigree Puppy, Pedigree Large Breed, Pedigree Small Breed, Pedigree Active Nutrition, Pedigree Healthy Joints, Pedigree Healthy Longevity, Pedigree Healthy Weight, and Pedigree Sensitive Nutrition.
Ingredients in Pedigree foods typically include whole ground corn as the first ingredient. Other ingredients in the foods include meat and bone meal, corn gluten meal, animal fat, and soybean meal. The foods use artificial preservatives such as BHA/BHT. They also include artificial colors. You can find some of these ingredients in a lot of moderately good dog foods but when you find all of them in a food, we think it suggests that the food is low quality. Obviously, Pedigree dog foods are bestsellers and have been for years. They are found in every grocery store in the U.S. and they have identified themselves with marketing for shelter dogs (“Dogs Rule”). There are probably lots of dogs who have eaten Pedigree dog food their entire lives without any problems. But we think Pedigree dog foods, in general, are not a good choice for most dogs if you have the opportunity to buy something better.
Calories in the foods are also on the low side: 311 and 313 per cup for the Adult food and Large Breed Adult. Only 239 for the Small Breed Adult, even though most foods for small breed dogs are higher in calories because small breeds use more energy per pound. The Active Nutrition formula, which you might expect to have more calories, has only 293 calories per cup. This is very low for an active formula.
Guaranteed analyses for the foods show that most of the adult foods have about 21 percent crude protein and 10 percent crude fat. The Active Nutrition formula has 26 percent crude protein and 12 percent crude fat. Again, this is low compared to most active dog formulas.
Considering the carbohydrate matter in these foods, as well as the corn content, we think many people who feed Pedigree will find that half the food they feed will be undigested by their dogs. People who feed these foods will probably have a lot of dog poop to clean up in the yard. While it may sound silly, you can often tell how good a dog food is by how much poop you have to scoop. If you are scooping a lot, it means your dog isn’t digesting the nutrients in the food very well. Foods that produce small, compact poop usually mean that your dog is getting the most out of the nutrients in the food and there isn’t much left for him to eliminate from his body. (Yes, it’s true that dog people do spend a lot of time looking at dog poop.) Of course, any dog can have some digestive upset when you change his food, even if you do so gradually. But take a look at the poop your dog is leaving when your dog is eating a food he is accustomed to and see if you’re happy with the food.
We cannot recommend Pedigree dog food on the basis of their ingredients and other factors.

Our Pedigree Sensitive Nutrition Food for Dogs Analysis:
Pedigree Sensitive Nutrition has ingredients that are a little different from the other Pedigree foods so we thought it was a good idea to look at it more closely. Pedigree says the food is intended for dogs with sensitive stomachs. It has no corn, wheat, or soy, so some dog owners might be tempted to buy this food for their dogs, thinking it’s a better food.
The first five ingredients in this food are:
- Ground whole grain barley
- Poultry by-product meal
- Brewers rice
- Poultry fat (source of omega 6 fatty acids [preserved with bha and citric acid])
- Fried plain beet pulp
You’ll notice that the first ingredient is still a grain and not a meat protein. On a dry matter basis, we figure the food has 23.9 percent protein, 11.4 percent fat, 4.5 percent fiber, and about 51.1 percent carbohydrates. That’s an exceptionally high amount of carbs for any dog food. The food has 280 calories per cup, which is low. This food is AAFCO approved for maintenance.
The first ingredient, ground whole grain barley, is 90 percent carbs, 7 percent protein, and 3 percent fat. Barley has some nutritional value, of course. It’s a good source of dietary fiber and manganese, for example. Some dogs can eat it more easily than other grains, like corn. But you probably don’t want it to be the biggest ingredient in your dog’s diet.
The second ingredient is poultry by-product meal. According to AAFCO this is the ground, rendered, clean parts of the carcass of slaughtered poultry, such as necks, feet, undeveloped eggs, intestines, exclusive of feathers, except in such amounts as might occur unavoidably in good processing practices. It’s better than some of the vaguer meat meals because at least you know that it’s poultry. And by-products from poultry are not so bad. Many people who feed a raw diet give their dogs necks and other by-product parts. But if you could choose what goes in your dog’s food, this probably isn’t an ingredient you would select. We can say that chicken and turkey, in general have about 70-80 percent protein so “poultry” by-products would have something in this neighborhood. As a meal, most of the moisture has been removed and this ingredient would have several times as much protein as normal.
The third ingredient is brewers rice. Brewers rice is the small milled fragments of rice kernels that have been separated from the larger kernels of milled rice. It is often used in pet food to provide structure and texture to the food. It’s not uncommon to see it far down the list of ingredients. However, when it appears near the top of the list, it is usually being used as a filler ingredient.
The fourth ingredient is poultry fat (preserved with BHA and citric acid). Poultry fat is, again, better than an unnamed fat source since you know it’s poultry, but it’s not as good as chicken fat or turkey fat. Poultry fat can provide some omega fatty acids for your dog. We are reluctant to provide nutritional information for poultry fat without knowing specifically what it includes. We also note that this fat is preserved with BHA. BHA (Butylated hydroxyanisole) is a controversial artificial preservative that has been suggested as a human carcinogen. For this reason, most people try to avoid it in pet foods since it’s thought that it can also cause cancer in pets.
The fifth ingredient is dried plain beet pulp. Many people are confused about beet pulp. They believe it’s a sweetener or a filler or that it has some other bad properties. We like dried beet pulp a lot. It’s a good dietary fiber and it is not a sweetener. All of the sugar has already been removed from the beet pulp before it is used in pet food. This ingredient is very good for a dog’s digestion.
Of these first five ingredients, we are most troubled by the use of the BHA, though we don’t like the barley as the first ingredient either. However, we also find it troubling that the food is preserved with BHA & citric acid (a preservative) listed at the end of the ingredient list.
Overall, this food does look better, in terms of ingredients, than some of the other Pedigree foods, but we still can’t recommend it.
Where can you buy Pedigree?
You can buy Pedigree dog foods virtually anywhere dog foods are sold, as well as online.
Hi my dog has been eating Pedigree for years now since Beneful had the salmonella recall and made my dog terribly sick and now my dog is sick again from pedigree. She refuses to eat and is sick to her stomach, bloated, constipated and in distress. I am going to start making homemade food. I am tired of trusting these big companies making these foods that are making our animal’s sick so homemade food it is. I cannot trust these companies to feed my dog properly
I adopted my dog from a local shelter. For nine months I have been feeding him pedigree with out any issues until now! He has has explosive diarrhea with mucus, been throwing the food up, been laying around ( which is totally not like him) he has been doing this for days. So instead of feeding him the dog food i was giving him rice with chicken broth and his diarrhea and vomiting got better…and he was eating again…with that being said I went back to feeding his regular ….of pedigree and all the symptoms started to return. After he seemingly got worse I took him to the vet where they tested for parasites did a stool and blood sample, all to which were normal. I left there with some anti nausea meds and antibiotics, And a 100 bill…n after a few days of meds and a blan diet (chicken broth n rice) he has returned to his normal self… And everything is regular again….now once again not thinking its the dog food I give him the pedigree again…and low n behold here we go again!!!! Something is wrong with UR FOOD!! Please consider a recall or something…after this experience I starting searching the internet and several …several other folks have had the same issues with this dog food…there dogs becoming sick and even death has occurred. There is definitely something wrong here..
We bought Pedigree canned dog food from Walmart in Syracuse UT on June 2nd 2014. Barcode on the product is 002310027315. Within two days of eating the first can of this food both of our dogs started experiencing abdominal discomfort with diarrhea with blood in the stool and vomiting with blood in the vomit. We sought treatment and stopped feeding the Pedigree and both improved within a week. We have been attempting to contact Pedigree to recall and also the Walmart so they could pull these and are running into a brick wall on both accounts. Please, do not buy any of the canned food with this barcode number for your pet until something is done.
3 days ago my husband bought Pedigree brand dog food on accident instead of our usual brand. And now after feeding it to our dog for less than 2 days our otherwise healthy and extremely energetic dog has died. After hours of online research I’ve learned various other people have also lost thier dogs after feeding them Pedigree. The symptoms in the few hours leading too her death are the same in other cases. There is no doubt in my mind this food has killed our dog. And of course nothing is being done about it!
I believe this food killed my daughter’s dog. I don’t know what can be done about. !
I purchased Ol Roy “Like Gravy Train” at Walmart. After eating the food, he threw up. Last week I purchased a Pedigree Dentastix at Walmart and within an hour after eating it he threw up. Now he can’t hold anything down. He is not his usual perky self and just wants to lay and sleep. Today he refused to take even a piece of meat. I since have found out that “Ol Roy” is produced by Pedigree. I can’t help but think that Walmart is aware of the problem with Pedigree items. Why is Pedigree food items still on your shelves and removed immediately. Pets are not only getting sick, they are dying as a result of Pedigree. I will contact everyone I can think of in order to get this garbage off the market. I’m starting with the Missouri Attorney Generals Office and Consumer Affairs. Being aware of the problem and not taking any action tells me Walmart could care less about their customers and the suffering their pets are experiencing. If my Aussie dies or suffers permanent damage believe me I will not hesitate to Institute litigation. I am spreading the word on the internet to warn people about Pedigree and Walmart. Check the following site and see for yourself what is happenig to our pets because of Pedigree.

I believe my daughter’s dog died from eating Pedigree dry dog food. He was lethargic, vomiting, had a very high kidney and liver counts, had to be put down. No explanation of what happened other than he ate some toxin. There is nothing in the yard or in the house that he got into.
pet food is flavored with what is called green grease..everything we dont consume is put in cooking vats and cooked down to a grease form, This green grease is very stinky,if you get it on your clothing you have to throw away..thats where the term chicken flavored or beef flavored comes from.
My 2 dogs have had the runs for the last 4 days. Pedigree dry food has to be the reason. It is the only thing they both eat… 430E2KKM0G expire 7.24.15 I don’t know what the deal is, but Im throwing this crap out!!!!
I have two boston terriers. We got a big bag of Pedigree Adult Chicken Flavor dry dog food from Walmart. They both were throwing up, itching more than usual, and restless behavior (uncomfortable). They barely even ate at all! I thought it was just from switching dog foods. A week later the whole family was sick. I just thought they were sick with us. They are still sick and everyone else is better. Time to switch brands!
My three dogs got sick and refused to eat pedigree dry chicken flavor, one died and the other two are recuporating with probable permanent damage. It started after they switched from beef flavor to chicken flavor 55 lb bags at target wareham ma. i never thought it could be the food and poisoned my dogs.
I fed my dog dentastix and he became deathly ill. He had a piece of metal brush in his stomach. It ended up costing me $1500 for buying some dentastix. I will brush my dogs teeth instead now.
My rescue dog has a hernia and cannot eat dry food. we’ve been feeding her pedigree can food for a year. just recently she has had explosive diarrhea for 3-4 days. We switched her food for month and things improved. we went back to Pedigree to see what would happen
and the diarrhea came back right away. With all these complaints, why is it still on the shelf?
What does it take to get it off the market? sounds like the dry and can food has problems.
Pedigree must have changed some ingredients for this to happen to so many dogs…
Tired of it…….
My dog became deathly ill after eating Pedigree Little Champions dog food which I purchased at Walmart in Whiteville NC I have always used Pedigree dog food but no more
I will never purchase another bag , box, or pack of it and I will tell everyone about it. This company should be held accountable for all the dogs this company has made sick and some even died from this We paid good money for this food and all of us should get together and do a class action law suit on this company. Our pets have to suffer for company’s like this one in order to improve there bottom line of profit. Shame Shame on you, our animals can not talk and I am sure if they could, this situation would not have gotten to the point it is. Shame on Walmart for carrying this product with so many recalls . Lives matter we are all animals. This company should be closed now.
A month ago my 3 year old Rottweiler almost died after eating a Dentastix, it was his first one. Please be careful with this product. I gave him a piece of Dentastix and the next Day he was very sick, This is his fourth week with medicines, he almost died after eating this bad product.
Hi Gabriela, What were your dogs symptoms? Right now my dog has severe anemia.
We’ve had our dog for about five years now. When we adopted him from the shelter he was about four years old and totally housebroken! Lately, he’s been having large accidents at night no matter how many times he is taken out. We started feeding him Pedigree a few months ago, our mistake! I bought it because of a sale too good to pass up. What a big mistake!!! Will never, ever purchase anything from this company again.
f you people I just started feeding my dogs this nasty food thank goodness nothing happened to them I caught it in time. I agree im going to start homemade dog food from here on out my dogs are my babys
I just started a bag of Pedigree Small Breed for my chihuahua mix, Jack, and he seems to really like it. He gets dry any time, but I soften a little dry food with water in the evenings, along with homemade chicken and rice. The weird thing is, when softened, these bright blue specks appear in the kibble… What in the world are those blue specks??
We had a beautiful st. Bernard named Sophia. We fed her pedigree dog food her entire lufe. She lived to be 15 years old!!! Our vet said I don’t know what you did but st. Bernard’s don’t live this long. He asked what food we were feeding her. I told him Pedigree her whole life. The only other thing we did was love her with all the love we could. She got lots of exercise. Our Sophia was shot in the leg when she was 8 years old. The hospital said whoever shot her was aiming for her heart based on where a piece of the bullet was lodged in her leg. Unfortunately at age 14 she got bone cancer. We did everything we could for us but then the time came where she was in so much pain she couldn’t walk anymore. It was just cruel to let her suffer. I still cry when I talk about my beautiful Sophie girl. She was the best dog. Loved everyone and everything!!! We had great luck with Pedigree. As,a matter of fact we also had 2 great pyrenees, Captain and Winston. They lived to be 12 and 13. These dogs life span is 8-10 years. I really believe it’s because of the pedigree food, lots of exercise and so much love!!!
My dogs itachi and peanut both switched to this food from cheap everpet food, well after 1 day on it.. my dogs are not Vomiting!! and having Diarrhea laying there listles.. they are up to date on their shots .. IDK what to do!! Putting them to Purina Puppy Chow as that brand hasnt failed me yet with Peanut, Itatchi is a new pup 5 months old..a rescue pup.. i dont want to lose them..
I fed Pedigree dry and canned food to my Mastiff. He was my soul mate. He suddenly refused to eat. He died from bloating and internal bleeding caused by painful cancer I know was caused by the food. I basically killed my best friend from poisoning him by feeding him Pedigree. 🙁
Regarding canned Pedigree dog food!
Within every new can of Pedigree dog food there is more and more of a gel-like substance which consists of probably a third of its content!
Unfortunately my senior dog is used to this food and refuses to eat any other better quality brand!
