Blue Buffalo Dog Food
Blue Buffalo is often described as a holistic pet food manufacturer that cares about more than just their bottom line – they are genuinely concerned for the health and wellness of dogs and cats. When Bill and Jackie Bishop’s beloved Blue (a large-breed Airedale,) started having health problems, the couple took a serious interest in pet health. This led to them developing Blue Buffalo dog food, a natural brand that promotes a healthy oxidative balance, a strong immune system, and health in dogs.
The company prides itself on using only the highest quality, natural ingredients in their products to provide pets with the best nutrition. Not only does the company ensure that a whole source of protein is the FIRST ingredient on the list, but they also vow to exclude all animal by-products as well as artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives.
They seeks to provide dogs and cats with the type of diet they are naturally meant to follow – one based on food that can be found in nature. Not only do they offer formulas for pets in all stages of life, but they also have specialty formulas for pets with special nutritional needs or restrictions.
Who manufactures Blue Buffalo?
Located in Wilton, Connecticut, the Blue Buffalo Company owns and produces Blue Buffalo dog food. However, they outsource their manufacturing to a number of different food production companies, including CJ Foods, Ainsworth, ProPet, Triple T Foods, Tuffy’s, and ANI/Vita-Line.

Blue Buffalo Reviews
A lot of dog owners seem to be pleased with Blue Buffalo dog food. On Reddit, a couple of pet store clerks reported that all of the customers who returned their dog food did it because their dogs had allergy issues (with the grains and certain proteins in the food) or didn’t like the taste of it, never because they got sick from it.
Ingredients and Production
There are nine different dry dog food formulas – seven of which are for adult dogs and two for puppies. In addition to these dry foods, there are also a number of wet foods and treats available in a variety of flavors including beef, chicken, salmon, duck and more.
They promise their consumers that all of its products are made with “the unique combination of high-quality natural ingredients plus exclusive LifeSource Bits.” All of Blue Buffalo’s products are made with high-quality protein sources, whole grains and garden vegetables. The exclusive LifeSource Bits mentioned in the company’s tag line contain a blend of vitamins and minerals that were selected by veterinary nutritionists to provide pets with well-balanced nutrition. In addition to using natural ingredients, Blue Buffalo also promises never to use the following in its products:
- Poultry by-product meals
- Artificial flavors or colors
- Chemical preservatives
- Corn, wheat or soy (common allergens)

Product Line:
Real deboned meat is always the first ingredient, but that can raise some concerns because real meat loses most of its water and protein content after being cooked. However, after taking a look at some of the recipes this brand has to offer, we found the crude protein content to be sufficient. It’s usually because meat meal is usually the next ingredient. Meat meal provides 300% more protein than real meat does.
In addition to meat, they put the following necessary nutrient classes in their dog food:
- Fats (to provide a good source of energy and to help your dog absorb fat-soluble vitamins)
- Carbohydrates (a rich source of energy and dietary fiber)
- Vitamins & minerals
- Water
Where can you buy Blue Buffalo?
It’s available in a number of pet food stores across the nation. If you visit their website, you’ll see a store locator under the navigation menu. Enter your zip code, and then the website will show you a list of the closest stores that carry Blue Buffalo dog food.
All in all, we’d rate Blue Buffalo as a premium dog food brand.

Are all your products made in America?
This is what I want to know! I fed Blue for a while, she eventually became ill….but she LOVES the Blue Buffalo Grain-Free Turkey Biscuits…..thing IS, I can find NO information on where they are made and also where the ingredients (ALL of them) come from! I always make sure the meat is holistic and raised in the US, plus US made….just because it says ‘Made in USA’ means nothing…..ingredients can still come from China….or somewhere else overseas…NO GOOD! I know anything can be ‘tainted’, but it’s still wise to purchase USA raised, USA manufactured…only exception is the Acana Ranchlands food (dry) I feed her…..the Vet has stated this is perfectly safe and VERY healthy, but I don’t listen to Vets anymore, either….I take it all with a grain of salt and then do a butt-load of research myself….there is a LOT they don’t keep up with. No where on the package of Blue Turkey Biscuits is the info we NEED….why!?
I been feeding my different the duck recipe for. Years and only recently I open a new bag and the next day they have diarrhea for 2 days now. Time for a vet and new food.
I have been giving my dog blue wilderness since we bought him and he loved it and two days ago open a brand new bag and today I was at the vet for 6 hours and they asked what I was feeding my dog and I told him and the vet told me quickly that he didnt recommend me giving that to him any more and now I had to buy him prescription royal since he has been having diarrhea.
Same here fine utill dry food grain free freedom gave my dog runs size was bigger kibble took back called blue they said no change in food bs why is this happing im done using earthborn
11 month old very active healthy 37lb. Heinz 57 mix, switched to Blue Buffalo chicken adult life source and
fine for 3 months on it, bought new bag label Dec 2015 in February and ate a little ,left it till next morning. Feed twice a day and usually devours it , dinner time came, wouldn’t touch it . Still had about half a cup of the old Blue bag and gobbled it up. Went out and nought different brand and gobbled that up . A few days later I added back in some Blue Buffalo and again wouldn’t touch it. Store did give me in store credit and switched and brought bag back, maybe a bad lot?
Between my daughter and me, we have 2 dogs. They have just suddenly decided they don’t care for their Blue Buffalo Life Chicken and Brown Rice. Is it possible the formula or the plant producing it has changed? We tried adding a small amount of canned dog food to it and they still won’t eat it. We’re mystified.
I’ve been feeding my dogs Blue Buffalo Grain Free Chicken Wilderness for quite a few years. Saturday I got two new bags and opened one to put in the container where I store it and noticed that the new food was much lighter in color and did not smell the same as the old that was left in the bottom of the container. Day 3 on new food – my dog battling cancer is going down hill suddenly and my other dog refused to eat it today. SOMETHING changed in this food because the color was much lighter – a different smell to it and also WAY less of the small “flavor” beads in this new batch.
It’s sad when you cannot trust these pet food manufacturers. I am switching to making my own dog food as a stew from now on. Done with mass marketed pet food.
I have a beautiful cavalier King Charles male that is 12 years old with no problems except his hearing. Our vet says he looks 5 years or so. I have fed him salmon blue buffalo for many years and he loved it. I was called by phone by the special independently owned boutique to state they would not recommend my dog stay on it because of recalls.. I appreciated their concern. They recommended Zignature trout so we tried a 4lb bag and he liked it. I’m disturbed because I only want what’s best for my cavalier.

I fed my dog this and went to the ER and she got really sick and the vet there sent paperwork to Blue and they never cared or gave us anything to help with the bill and claimed that it was the dogs fault they really didn’t listen to the vet.
They are all about money and not pets, that is scary.
Absolutely terrible. It was good in the past but recently over the past year it has been absolutely terrible for our dogs. Causes bloody diarrhea in both of our dogs every time we resort back to this junk food. Please never buy for your pets.
Did you remember to rule out ALL OTHER possible EXTERNAL CONTAMINANTS your dogs could have ingested prior to his/her issues began? EVERYTHING & I mean EVERYTHING, our companions come in contact with in their everyday routines have the possibility of giving them the symptoms you have described here. I personally had to change the laundry soap I use because of my Mastiffs’ sensitive skin. I also can’t wear any kind of perfume because it sends my Maine Coon into anaphalactic shock & he stops breathing. It is NOT always the food, people! Remember that the vets are also out there as a business and are not always right. They are PRACTICING animal medicine, not experts. Environmental condition changes are always something I look at before changing food or running to the vet. Animals can have allergies too! Hay fever is more common you think! STOP, STOP,STOP the unnecessary food brand blaming game & LOOK at EVERYTHING.
Yes, yes I have. I’m a stay at home wife and honestly spend 24 hours a day with Siberian Husky. It’s definitely the food. It is well known that Blue Buffalo started outsourcing ingredients from China around a year ago, and in the past 6 months there have been tons of BB customers complaining of the same symptoms. Most of the smaller pet food stores in my area have stopped carrying it. So yes, this time, it is definitely the food.
where are you’re facts about outsource and china, I would like to see that? I don’t go by just someone’s word of mouth, I like to see the research. which many people cannot provide because its easier to blame food then really look at the other variable that can contribute to illness.
I emailed Blue Buffalo and they said they do not source anything from China. All food is made in the USA.
Of corse there going to lie
i also asked BB about the outsourcing of china and issues at a focus group where head honchos were there..so its straight from the horses mouth..they said NOTHING IS OUTSOURCED, AND EVERYTHING IS MADE IN THE USA..march 2015!!
I’ve read enough here to convince me to steer clear of Blue Buffalo. By the way, I think the pet food industry at large is a going concern– a racket if there ever was one.
I have to disagree with some of the posts here stating to quit blaming BB that is it something else causing our beloved pets to become sick after eating BB products. I wanted to put our 12 y.o. dachshund on something healthier and chose to try BB. Within a couple of weeks of eating it she started to become more lethargic acting and then began the difficulty having bowel movements and when she did they were very smelly and loose, and not to mention the bouts of blood in her urine. She has been checked by the vet for stones and masses/cancer and is clear and only showed a UTI which was treated with antibiotics. She also began to not want to eat…which is not like her at all! I happened to be at home with the flu for several days and couldn’t get to the grocery store to pick up some more food for her and gave her what my other dog eats which is not BB (she won’t touch it at all!). She gulped it down and I also noticed no loose stools/difficulty with bowel movements, more alert, and no more blood in urine…and BB was the ONLY change of anything in her environment!!!
My dog began itching horribly in september. I thought it was seasonal allergies but it never went away. Then in early January I bought my usual chicken and brown rice formula that my dog has ALWAYS eaten. After the first bowl my poor Yorkie had horrible gas, diarreah, and wouldn’t even eat her treats. By day 2 she wouldn’t eat at all and was lethargic. She was also waking 4-5 times a night with tummy issues. Took her to the vet and he asked if I changed her food. I told him I had just opened a new bag of usual blue buffalo. He told me I was one of many who have brought their dog in for the same issue. I stopped feeding her that immediately put her on an antibiotic and changed to taste of wild food. She immediately got better!
This post is eerily EXACTLY what is happening to our dachshund. I’m taking the Blue Buffalo back to Petsmart tomorrow to see if We can get her old Royal Canin back. She has been lethargic and not like herself since I changed her food one week ago.
Thank you!
There are many other factors, besides their food, to look into when your dog gets sick. My dog has terrible allergies! I worry about his diet all of the time and have made a dozen unnecessary trips to the vet, due to terrible itchies, flaky skin, paw-licking and all that fun stuff. Typically, he ends up getting a steroid shot. Then, I buy some “hot spot” spray and/or some allergy meds (Benadryl, always). Finally, he gets a thorough bath with lots of au natural, hypoallergenic and moisturizing doggy spa day stuff and he does great! 🙂
That said, if your pet gets violently ill after you START them on any new food, then maybe you’re doing it wrong. I’d like to think everyone knows to very, very slowly introduce a new food to your pet. Even if it’s the exact same brand, level, type, etc. but you switch from “Duck Recipe” to “Salmon Delight”, or whatever. If you don’t slowly swap their food out, then you’ll absolutely have a sick dog on your hands.
During allergy season, be sure to brush them often and give an extra bath or two. The pet wipe things for in-between baths, especially with hydro cortisone or chamomile, aloe…you get the idea, are great for wiping paws and bellies to help ease itching and hot spots. Again, Benadryl works wonders for Winston. It doesn’t make him tired. Even if it did, it’s better for that to make him tired than for him to be exhausted from scratching and chewing himself to bits haha
I ramble. Sorry. It’s all out of love for our fur babies!
Our dog was fine on his first bag of BB Lifetime Protection Chicken and Brown Rice, but when we got a second bag of it he took a turn for the worse, having trouble with vomiting, diarrhea, and doesn’t want to go for walks anymore. We never suspected his food, but after trying to wean him VERY slowly back onto it after being on an oatmeal and boiled chicken diet, we can never get beyond 1/4 C and the vomiting and diarrhea start all over again. We’re switching to a different brand at this point. This has been going on for about a month and a half now.
Maybe, just maybe IT IS THE FOOD.
If you beloved pet gets deathly sick after you start them on Blue Buffalo and gets better when you take them off it perhaps it was the food, yes? Not your shaving lotion, not your toothpaste and not your sweaty socks.
It was the food. Face facts!
If your dog gets sick, its the food that is coming up, regardless of the brand. Your logic is incomplete.
I don’t think you understand the original comment.
I tried a bag of puppy food from blue, recommended by petsmart, and he was sick within a couple of hours. I thought maybe he just got something he shouldn’t have, but it got worse with the next meal. On the 3rd meal, he would not eat at all. After a vet visit took him off the food and back on to his other name brand food and was fine within a day. We tried again slowing adding the blue back in, but even a teaspoon of it cause him to throw up again. A waste of 20.00 and would not give it to any animal again.
We share our home with a 7 year old terrier mix (Westie/Bijon) who has been fed 1/2 cup twice daily divided equally between 1/4 cup Blue Buffalo Adult Small Breed (Chicken/Brown Rice) and 1/4 cup (wet, canned) Chicken Dinner. This is absolutely CONTROLLED & MEASURED. There are no snacks, no kitchen bits, no cheesey treats, no meat scraps, no toast crusts and NO dog biscuits. If you have not been as careful while testing dog foods, you are only guessing. Our findings, guided by vets, are result of many controlled tests with various foods attempting to beat SEVERE pancreatitus found at age 18 months… and resulted in clearing the pancreatic inflamation likely resulting from poor food formulations containing excess soy proteins and grains. The dog is only allowed to walk on leash, 1/2 mile daily. Therefore access to mushrooms, carrion, dead bugs, worms, bird and rabbit droppings and the occasional ground squirrel, not to mention the phosphates found in every lawn and garden is absolutely controlled. The dog is vet checked every six months, and is at perfect weight and satisfactory blood chemistry panels. There can be some loose stool for the first week of Blue products, as a result of the concentrated vitamins in the dark brown small kibble added to some formulations. Our dog refused it for about three days, then accepted it when blended with the wet. There ya go. Your mileage may vary, but nothing BUT Blue goes into my dog’s mouth.
My dog has been on a strict blue diet for at least two years, but she has refused to eat it lately which I find alarming because she always eat very well. I am trusting my dog’s senses on this matter because she might detect something I can’t. Plus, I see many people reporting similar circumstances.
Yes. SOMETHING has changed!
I can assure you that I also have followed the same protocol when trying to figure out what has been making my dog sick for the past six months. Their formulation has changed, and my vet has said that he has had quite a few dogs come in with the same symptoms, and the only clear link is Blue Buffalo.
I fed my Greyhound nothing but Blue Buffalo for the last 4 years. She loved it. Because of BB great commericals and past great reviews, I thought I was feeding her the very best.
About a month ago she started to refuse to eat the chicken and brown rice kibbles. I had to hand feed her BB canned. Then she started to violently vomit. The the runny stools that became brown water.
I rushed her to the Vet where she was admitted and placed on IV for hydration. After 2 days I was able to bring her home. She was unable to eat boiled chicken. The vomit became worse. Since she was not eating the vomit was thick mucus and foam. I rushed her to a speciality hospital. A blood panel showed renal failure. She passed away on 09/04/2014. She was too young to have kidney failure.
My heart is broken. She was my child.
I took samples of her food to the Vet for testing. I have notified BB but have not heard from them. If this dog food caused her to suffer horribly and pass away, I will hire an attorney. Please look at more than 700 complaints on Consumer Affairs web site.
Judy, when we lose our furry family its always a hard thing, an absence that leaves our heart unfulfilled. I am reminded of a family cat whom we loved and adored. She was an inside outside pet, and had free access to our yards and gardens. Renal failure took her very quickly, at an early age. Our vet shared with us many potential causes, including poisons, mostly from household items. It made the heartbreak even worse when we were considering that our garage or garden chemicals may have destroyed our cats kidneys. In hindsight we have concluded that snail bait may have been the compound that killed her.
I have feed my dog the BB salmon recipe for a couple years. She has digestive issues, but she seems to do better with this food. She has always had really good appetite and eats right away during feeding time. Something has changed in the food. Lately, she is refusing to eat her food and has vomitted a few times.
Please read my post. Although Blue denies meat imported from China, a reputable vet in my area told my friend to discontinue Blue. I did after my babies were on Blue for one month. They did not feel well and when my friend told me this I immediately switched back to their former food without transitioning. One week later they feel well again. I am hoping there was no damage to liver or kidneys.
no need to be troubled , i love blue buffalo though
Be aware: Our 11 year old dog has died 8 days after beginning Blue Buffalo Wilderness Rocky Mtn Recipe from a massive GI bleed- bloody stools and vomiting. He literally bled to death- absolutely horrible experience for us. The Michigan Dept of Agriculture is investigating. If your precious pets are having bloody diarrhea and or vomiting- URGENTLY get them to the Vet for treatment.
I have a 10 month old black Labrador. She has been eating blue buffalo Lamb & Oatmeal puppy food (based on high reviews) since she joined our family in May. Although, her stool is soft and runny more times than not. I am now contemplating changing her food to see if it helps! What are your recommendations? What do you feed your large breed puppy?
I switched my Pug and Chinese Crested to Blue in November, and did a slow transition. They did not seem to like it, and then they seemed very lethargic and unwell. A friend told me her vet told her to immediately discontinue Blue because the formula had changed and there WAS foreign meat. When I heard that, everything clicked. I immediately returned to their old dog food, and did not transition. Within one week they were back to being their normal happy selves. I emailed Blue and got some pretty evasive answers, which included words such as “most”, “many”, and ” can” which threw up red flags for me. This email commented on venison, rabbit, trout, and wild boar, bur never mentioned beef or poultry. I received another email assuring me their meat did not come from China, but all the wording is not clear. I was also assured their food was FDA approved and inspected, but that by no means top quality. FDA is not totally truthful either.

I recently purchased a bag of adult lamb and brown rice life protection formula with lifesource bits….however there were no lifesource bits to be found in the entire bag. My little dog had been eating Blue for 5 years but recently began throwing up and having loose stools. I went back to the pet store where I purchased Blue and they just told me to bring the bag back must have been a mistake. I could exchange it for another bag of Blue. Why would I want to do that? If they can make that kind of mistake leaving out the so called Life source bits what other mistakes do they make. Going off Blue now!
I have a 2 year old Great Dane, and an almost 2year old poodle mix. The little one has been on Blue Buffalo chicken and rice her entire life, (going from the puppy food to the adult) and the big one since I rescued him earlier this year. Neither of them has ever had a single problem. In fact, when I brought home the rescue dog he came with runny stools. After less than a week on the Blue Buffalo it was gone. They are both healthy active dogs. I will watch for any changes after buying new bags, but for now, Blue Buffalo will continue to be all they get.
after reading comments from all these blue users I am nervous to continue using blue.
I have been feeding blue to all of my 5 dogs for about 6 months now. no problems but dont want any. Now I am confused. I heard it was best with no chicken by products , etc.
No one getting sick or vomiting yet. I will keep watch. Is there another good dog food out there. I fed 3 of my dogs pedigree and they all died of cancer.
Who did you hear it was the best from? Their super expensive marketing campaign? Go talk to the employees at a smaller, mom and pop pet store. Chances are they don’t even carry Blue Buffalo anymore. I switched to Nature’s Logic, and have been thrilled with the results. Tons of energy, and no more terrible gas or loose stools!
Everyone, please look into Acana or Nature’s Logic if you’re having problems with Blue Buffalo. I used to manage a pet store and these are the best on the market. BB isn’t even carried in mostof the small pet stores in my area anymore because of concerns over outsourcing of ingredients and recalls. Please stop feeding your dog this poison.
If you look up the recalls there have been TWO the last one was in 2010, I think a lot of people are jumping on a bandwagon here. RESEARCH the topic in more than one place and in impartial judging. This is true for any product, animal or human…
I just started feeding my dog blue buffalo wilderness chicken a few months ago and he has been gradually getting sicker and sicker. He has been to the Veterinarian numerous times with every testing possible and we can’t find an answer. I’ve now spent over a thousand dollars. It’s been 1 1/2 days off the blue buffalo and he seems to be getting better. Time will tell but researching everything I have, I’m starting to think its the food especially with all the comments I’ve read. Sorry Blue Buffalo but I will never feed your product again.
I’ve used Blue Buffalo for both of my dogs, one since he was a puppy of 8 weeks and the other was about 2 1/2 years old. Never once had any problems. No gas, no vomiting, no diarrhea and no bloody stools. They LOVE the Life Protection Chicken & Brown Rice Small Breed. Most of the other brands mentioned cost more than BB, so I’m confused about mentions of price. There has only been 2 recalls since the company began. If you research, you will find that, in reference to the Purina (Nestle) law suit, BB uses a handful of manufacturers, as most companies do, and 1 admitted to using by-products AFTER BB looked into the Purina claim. That manufacturer is no longer being used. BB was unaware of the deceptive practice by the manufacturer and took care of it after finding out. I would bet that this happens a lot more often than the dog food companies (pretty much any company) and consumers are even aware. I’ve researched a lot after all this started, and I have yet to find any factual information stating that products from China are being used. I’m not arguing with anyone, I’m just stating my own personal experience and my research, which anyone can do via the web. NOW I have a question, how is it that Purina knew which manufacturers batch to test and when to get their test results? THAT sounds kind of sketchy to me. BTW, my dogs, 1 adopted Purebred Pom and 1 Rescued Mix, are both very healthy at their annual exams, they look beautiful and they seem very happy.
I gave my baby Dixie sue buffalo blue never again I thought that it was great my baby threw up for two days and bleed.I.am so sorry for the others.hope everyone sees these.
I have three dogs that I rescue. 14, 12 and 7 pound dogs. The 7 pound dog had to have surgery, most teeth removed and demands two daily medicine twice a day. He was so broken when I found him that he broke my hart… The vet gave him less than a few months to live…
I spent over $5,000.00 to try and give him a few months of pain free normal life, that at his estimated age of 12 and condition of his old injuries, the vet assumed this dog lived in severe pain for most of his life. His internal organs almost failing from malnutrition and was 4 3/4 pounds when he should be what he is now 7 pounds.
After almost three years he is still with me and the joy of our life…. Why?
I did what my mom did for our dog when I was very young and now I do for my dogs and the reason the vet tells us is the reason…….. I COOK FOR THEM. FOOD JUST FOR THEM, Not table scraps. I cook one time per week then portion the daily food in the refrigerator and leave some frozen for emergency.
Bulk is rice or yams with real meats (beef, chicken, fish, they love wild Norway mackerel) and mashed carrots and peas. I always add flax seed and sun flour oils. It is like making a stew in the crock pot. Dry/dehydrated beef, yams, carrots, apple (not all) make great chew snacks. I give then a boiled ox tail (the right size is important) once a week. Their health is great according to the vet and takes a little tweaking to get the poop solid but never solid like the hard logs that come out with commercial foods.
The little guy is named lucky…. and he is a spoiled royal pain in the ass…. and I said before, the love of our life.
try oatmeal too
Many home diets lack in calcium, especially if they are not getting any ground bones. I add calcium citrate to my dog’s diet.
I am shocked (and very concerned) to be reading these comments about BB. I have a beautiful 10 yr. old Belgian Malinois. We had always fed her Purina ProPlan until approx. 2 1/2- 3 yrs. ago and then switched to BB because it was so highly recommended. I have switched flavors between Lamb, Salmon and Fish with Oatmeal just to give her some variety. Lately I have noticed she is drinking more and also seems to want more food than usual. Last night she let me know she wanted to go out and after bringing her back she wanted to go out again. As soon as she hit the yard she began ripping grass out, almost desperately. I called her at least 4 times before she finally came back to me. Now I am not sure what to do. Other than these issues she seems to be fine. Trip to the vet and blood work?? What food do most of you feel safe using?? Really appreciate any advice anyone can offer. Thanks.
oatmeal, rice, sweet potatoes, vegetables-like kale, peas, carrots, string beans etc. Boiled chicken or beef, fish
I don’t know what to think. Our family is very careful to try to avoid ANYTHING that goes in our mouths or on our skin that is made in China or contains ingredients from China. That includes our dog and cat food. I was under the impression that Blue Buffalo products were strictly American made and sourced. The only information I’ve seen claiming that BB uses China-sourced ingredients is purely anecdotal … with no proof or independent sources to verify their claims.
I’m not saying that refutes the claim. I would truly like to know. So, I’m just saying that I’d like a definitive source for proof of the claim. Anyone?
Anecdotally, we have 5 cats and a dog. All of our animals are in the advanced stages of life for their breeds, and are all still going very strong with no end in sight. They have all been on BB products for years now. One time we made the mistake of running out of BB for our dog and had to buy another brand’s premium dog food instead. Big mistake … gas and runny stools. We took her off of that as soon as we could resupply with BB, and her condition improved immediately.
So, we’re sticking with BB, but will change the second someone shows proof beyond doubt that BB uses ingredients from China.
I am shocked reading these comments about bb. We have a Yorkie and a Shizu mix furbabies. We actually just switched their food about a month ago to bb lamb and rice because of a horrible episode of sickness from our Shih tzu from a previous food he was on. We did the whole chicken and rice thing and then talked to a rep at Petco and she really advised bb was the best to feed them. So…we switched and haven’t had any problems since. They eat it all when we feed so this baffles me. Now, I am a little concerned considering the 900 complaints I just read or mostly read on another website. I will most definitely be discussing this with my husband and keeping an eye out on my furbabies. I don’t feel like I need to pull them off this yet but best believe I will be doing more research on this food/company.
I will never buy Blue buffalo again, you people that think its not possible for this product to cause illness in your dogs, you best think again…My year and half old blue nose pit was very healthy and happy before i switched to BB, little did i know that would soon change. After only 5 weeks on the adult chicken recipe , my dogs health took a drastic change. The first thing i noticed was the awful gas my dog developed from this food, not just for a day or two, i mean everyday he had gas…Before using BB, my dog had healthy stools, but shortly after starting on BB that changed also . His poop was runny and seldom hard, he went from pooping twice or three times a day to 5 or 6 times a day.. Every time he pooped it was a runny mess.. His energy level dropped down to nothing after the 3rd week, sleeping way more than normal..It wasn’t until i noticed bright red blood in his runny poop that i realized something was seriously wrong… So i took him to the vet and the first thing they noticed was that he had lost 8 lbs since his last visit.. To make it short: I spent over 480.00 on tests for him, all of which showed nothing wrong… When the vet was reading over the questions they had asked prior to the tests, he saw that i was feeding him Blue Buffalo.. He looked at me and said” Here is your problem right here.. He said there has been too many complaints on this food to ignore them and insisted i stop using it… Well, guess what ? After 6 days off Blue Buffalo, my dog is doing much better. No more gas, stools are normal, no blood and he isn’t sleeping all day. As for his weight, its too soon to tell if he’ll gain it back, but if i was a betting man, i would bet he does.. All dogs are different, just like people, they may react different to certain foods.. To see a dogs health take such a drastic change is such a short time, to me is proof enough that something in this food is not right.. After reading all the complaints on this product, it appears im not the only one who sees a problem…
Yes Chris your story is so similar to mine. They need to recall this stuff!
All 3 of my dogs have been on blue buffalo life protection brown rice and chicken since they were all puppies. I have 2 dachshunds and a chihuahua They have never had any sort of stomach issues with blue buffalo. We bought a new bag for this year last week and noticed the kibble was smaller and smelled different. Our dogs started eating it. Then this week one of our dogs started vomiting and having really bad bloody diarrhea. We thought she ate something bad while we were at work. The symptoms got worse and on the third day we took her to the emergency vet hospital. They thought she had parvo but she was current on her vaccines she was very lethargic and weak and had a temperature. They did labs on her and she did not have parvo but was very dehydrated they stated she probably had colitis and gave her an anti vomiting shot and gave her saline drip and anti diarrheal meds.
She was put on a boiled chicken and rice diet and her condition improved. My two other dogs then got really sick and had the same symptoms after eating blue buffalo that is when we connected the dots and knew it had to be the food. Once we stopped the food the dogs got better. I read similar symptoms that dogs got on a review website. I believe blue buffalo changed their recipe and that is what cause one of my dogs to almost die from it. Had I not taken her to the vet I know she wouldn’t have made it. I will never buy this awful food again!!!
I always had my two dogs on blue buffalo food and the last bag I bought for them was a horrible experience. They both started pooping in the house and throwing up. They never had this problem before. It was the BB Lamb dry food that I gave them.
I took them off the food and gave them boiled chicken, fish or beef with oatmeal and rice, kale, pea or string beans and an occasional egg. They are all better now.
Blue buffalo dog food is absolutely THE WORST!!!! I have 2 dogs who have both got sick from this food, and 2 friends who hAve dogs have also suffered from vomiting and diarrrhea. By this company not stating that the food is now made in China and that there’s no complaints about dogs/cats getting sick is disgusting. I just viewed a page with 943 complaints about how their dogs have been sick/died. This company shouldn’t be aloud in pet stores !!! This line should be completely removed !!!!
My poor puppy started on Blue on Friday never again diaherra vomiting and itchy skin. Not himself. I made him carrots brown rice and an egg. I will feed him when he wakes up. Poor thing I hope he gets better soon. I bought this expensive food thinking I was doing the right thing boy was I wrong.
I recently thought about starting my dog on Blue Buffalo, but decided to do some research first. Found a few articles about all these recalls they’ve done, including one for 2016. Apparently there was a lot of moisture and mold that occurred in the bags of dry food that was the source of the problem, and from what I’ve read from all the sites I looked at, it’s been killing and ailing many dogs. I’m surprised this hasn’t been a more spoken about issue or even mentioned on the News. I think I’ll just stick with the Devil I know isn’t hurting my baby, instead of messing with one I don’t since the complaints are as current as July 3rd, 2016 on the consumer sites and such. Hope this helps.
My 2 year old Golden Retriever has been eating Blue Buffalo since she was 6 weeks old. She has done pretty good, no major problems until February 1, 2015 when she began vomiting and having diarrhea. We took her to the vet who checked her out and gave her medication and she came home that afternoon. The medication did not work, she continued with the vomiting and diarrhea until we got her back into the vet the next day, where she stayed for 6 nights. They could not find out what was making her sick. They thought maybe she had an intestinal blockage that didn’t show up on x-ray and did surgery to explore her bowel. There was no blockage at all. They kept her on an IV and a catheter and slowly started to feed her bland food. She finally got to come home and when I started to get her back used to her Blue, after the second day the vomiting came back. That was when I started looking at her food and found so many different sites with so many different dogs having the same symptoms. I immediately stopped the Blue, did more research on dog food and found Orijin, which is made in Canada with all ingredients being local to the factory. No vitamins made in China, which I found out is pretty much the rule with all dog foods with vitamin supplements….all made in China. Anyway, she made a surprisingly quick recovery after changing her food, and I can’t remember her being so alert. Something changed in the Blue Buffalo dog food in late 2014, and they had to have known about it and have done nothing. Shame on them! Just watch your dogs if you continue with BB.
I have 2 dogs,
Hey Guys,
I have a 9month pit bull around 75 pounds and a 8year old beagle (15 pounds). I’ve been feeding the pit bull BB wilderness for a past few months after going between natural balance…They were both eating the Natural Balance, but the pit bull stools became a little too runny and the beagle stopped eating it. I had the pit bull on the puppy chicken formula, and made the mistake of one time getting a bag that said “natural revolutionary diet with Lifesource bits” but it didn’t have a flavor, YET it was the exact same color bag and in the same section as the chicken formula, this did cause my dog to get some pretty bad hives and lethargic, and throwing up. after brown chicken and rice and back to the regular adult chicken formula he has been back to eating, but not in the same frequency as before, I’m not sure if it’s his change in age or he doesn’t really like the food, but in looking to get a new formula or food and came across the site and seem to be a little more concerned than before about BB. Are there some better recommendations for a still growing and will be pretty large Pitbull?? In addition is there something I can feed both of them, or what is another recommendation for the Beagle I am currently feeling avoderm.. Thanks for the help!!
I’ve been reading all these comments and have a great concern re: D. Dennenburg’s post of January. Your dog most likely has a common diease found in middle to older aged dogs called Cushings Disease. Two classic signs are excess thirst and appetite. My sons dog has this disease. Check it out on the internet and I’ll bet you will find other symptoms also. I would love to be wrong because it involves the liver and requires much blood work to determine whether the adrenal glands or the pituitary gland is involved. The reason being the proper medical treatment depends on which organ is dysfunctional. I wish I would have seen your post sooner. The medication is very expensive and can have unpleasant side effects. We opted for holistic medication which is much less expensive and easier to tolerate. But this dog is a 14 year old and her disease has progressed to the point we mainly want to keep her comfortable and have more quality of life. My son ran up a $2,500. vet bill in just a few visits due to the lab costs and they wanted to do even more tests! She was stressing out going through this so we decided to just use the holistic approach and keep her as comfortable as possible. She still wets all over the house and has diarrhea but seems to feel ok. I guess treatment should be dependent on your dogs age. There are vets who will treat your dog and costs you thousands of dollars no matter how old your dog may be which is a shame and the treatment can be very miserable for an old weakened dog. My deepest sympathy for those of you who have lost your beloved pets. They are a gift from God to us. I feed my dogs BB also. Hard and wet food. I’m keeping a close eye on them for sure!
Margo,
I have been treating my dog holistically for 2+ years for Cushings with a Chinese Herb formula and homeopathic remedies. Neither is expensive. The UTI’s, panting, excessive thirst & hunger got way better in 3 weeks. He is a 35 lb Cocker Spaniel, and gets 2 “Snake & Dragon” teapills, 2x per day,
and homeopathic pellets – adrenocorticotrophin & quercus robur , 2 pellets 2x/day. All can be bought at Amazon.
A little addendum to my post; I didn’t mean to sound like its doom and gloom for your dog. If he has Cushings, is in otherwise good health, and can tolerate the drug he will be put on, he can live a good life. But be ready for a very large vet bill. The med alone costs $250. per month. At least that’s what my sons vet charged. I would still opt for the holistic route. I talked with a man who’s dog has Cushings Disease and his pet was doing well on it. It’s hard to gauge with my sons dog because she is so old and fragile. At least we know she is not suffering and that is the most important thing to us at this point in her life. BTW she has been fed organic food by him but he didn’t get her until she was ten and her previous owners were not as caring. Thankfully she has been dearly loved since becoming his “best friend.” My best to you and your dog.
My Pom has Cushings and my vet put him on Vetoryl. It only costs me about $85.00 per month. The initial tests ran me about $600…to confirm his suspicions that it was Cushings and then to check to make sure he was on the correct dosage. Now he only has blood work done yearly. That runs about $200. I wish you the best. My Beau has had no problems with the Vetoryl.
As I read all these comments and reviews, I am horrified because my dog is sick and at the vet and we can’t figure out what happened other than we opened a new bag of chicken and rice BB last weekend and now he hasn’t eaten in 3 days and is dehydrated from vomiting and diarrhea. He has eaten BB for almost 4 years without incident, and now something he ate has made him horribly ill. I swear, if there is a way to prove that BB is the reason behind all these similar illnesses, there should be a class action lawsuit brought against them.
The same thing has happened to us. Used same food for years then new bag and vomiting, lethargy. No other changes in his diet. New bag of food purchased this month. The chicken and rice for large dogs, grain free. I hope no permanent damage.
I noticed BB Life Protection line up changed the fish oil for Menhaden Fish Meal in some of their formulas (my case in the Small Breed Chicken and Oatmeal Puppy). Peas went down in the ingredients order along with other minor changes. That is why I noticed these bags smell different and fishy lately. I also noticed the new recipe bags are now resealable, and the kibble is smaller. Their website still have the old formula listed because there are still old recipes bags at some stores shelves (I contacted them). I had to get one of the new formula for my dog since that was all they had and noticed the fishy smell, however I mixed it with the old formula and the dog ate the new fishy smelly kibble first (go figure). After one complete bag of the new Chicken and Oatmeal recipe I’ve seen no changes or problems.
I have 3 Dogs,#1 11.5 yr old pit bull mix, #2 21 month old French bull dog #3. 5 month old French bull, all 3 are on and have always been on blue buffalo. my oldest dog is a diabetic and is still on BB with no issues. the vet had me try rx royal canine mixed half and half with BB, he got a huge belly ache started with diarrhea, and had runny bowel movements the entire time he was on the mix of royal canine rx/BB. As soon as I put him back on BB, the runny bowels stopped. the ingredients on the rx royal canine had chicken meal and chicken by products at the top of the list of ingredients, yuck. Not my BB. my 2 frenchies have been on BB since I got them, no issues at all, no itchy skin, no vomiting, no loose runny poos, everything is great. to sum it up, NO ISSUES AT ALL WITH BLUE BUFFALO. if people are having issues I do know that the BB with the wolf on the front has a higher protein content, some dogs cannot handle the extra protein, fyi
Began giving Blue Grain Free to my 5 month old puppy, three days later extreme diarrhea. Had to take back to the vet twice since vomiting started the second day of not eating. $250.00 later the vet told me to get rid of the Blue Buffalo product.
Blue used to be a good company– USED to is being the operative word here. All the outsourcing they do should be a HUGE red flag, especially for a product that brands itself as ‘premium’ and ‘holistic.’ Well, all those premium ingredients don’t do jack if they’re outsourced to countries with lax food inspection rules and toxic chemicals! When my Carin terrier mix puppy was on the Blue Grain Free Puppy Chicken blend she began to vomit yellow bile. Her coat was dull and she was really lethargic. She’s since gone through a switch to Taste of the Wild High Prairie and there was INSTANT improvement. The day after I started feeding her Taste of the Wild was they day she stopped vomiting bile. A month later, her coat was shiny and she actually started behaving energetically, like a terrier puppy should. Her stools also improved, they were no longer runny. She’s now on Fromm’s Gold Blend for Small Breeds and does even better on that.
first of all, when switiching your dog/pup to a new food, do any of you read the package instructions? Switching a food cold turkey can and will cause stomach upset and diarrhea. Not BB’s fault. 2nd, there are 4 different types of BB. Life Protection Formula, Basic, Freedom and Wilderness. Wilderness is very high protein/fat. Yes, that can cause pancreatitis in your dog. Again, nothing wrong with the food, just the wrong formulation for your dog. And, I’m reading about the folks who feed lamb, the dog gets sick and they immediately feed chicken. Maybe it was the lamb to begin with, not the food.
When the package instructions tell you to GRADUALLY switch the food, maybe that’s good advice.
There are so many pet foods out there, if one doesn’t work, switch to something else, don’t jump on the bandwagon and demand a recall. And, maybe it’s not the BB, maybe it’s the cheap treats or biscuits you are feeding.
And, the majority of vets are not going to recommend BB because they don’t have stock in the company. Things that make you go, hmmmmm.
This April 2015 and for the past week my two little dogs have suffered with severe watery diarrhea. I usually feed them BB canned wet dog food with my own boiled chicken and potatoes and sometimes added boiled peas or carrots. I stopped feeding them for about 12 to 24 hrs until they seemed better. I slowly gave them only boiled chicken and potatoes and only in small portions until they were themselves. Yesterday, I added the BB canned dog food and now they are sick again. I noticed last night as I was walking them that my mini schnauzer had diarrhea right away. During the night my 12 lb tiny poodle was sick and now has that watery diarrhea again and is so uncomfortable she can’t rest and keeps moving around. Her stomach is making such terrible noises and she keeps going into backyard to relieve herself and eat grass. I just happen to talk to a friend in AZ (I am in NYC) and he said his little baby was in the hospital with bleeding gastroenteritis! I asked what dog food he feeds her and he said only the best. IMO NOT anymore!! I am going to call him after this post and tell him not to use BB. I just hope my dear sweet poodle feels better soon. It’s so hard to watch. If not, I will go to vet.
Something is DEFINITELY wrong with BB. Very upset. I forgot to add that while feeding BB lately that my dogs were drinking voluminous amounts of water. Then they got sick. Someone else here noted the same thing. This time they got sick instantaneously. It is without a doubt BB.
Just a few comments…Look at the food that is sold at your vet’s office. They do get something out of switching your pet from whatever dog food it is on to something they sell…Also I run a small dog rescue organization and have fed all our rescues and our own pets BB Freedom for the last 5+ years..And not one illness and we adopt out about 150 dogs a year. As a critical care RN and vet tech I have researched dog foods diligently. The proteins and other food sourced ingredients are from USA but we make no vitamins in this country anymore so all the vitamins and other additives come from China in every pet food!! Especially high content in the treats of any brand.
Orijen…. Is the only food I’ll feed my animals.. Besides the lean grass fed beef I cook them and range free, antibiotic/hormone free chicken I cook my Akitas. Just saying… Read up on them, investigate them, do whatever you need to do, but when you do,, you’ll realize it is the best
We have four dogs: Jack Russell Terrier, Standard Poodle, Giant Schnauzer, and a Great Dane. Our dogs have been on Blue Buffalo for 4 years, and we have never had any trouble. Until Blue Buffalo, we could not find a food that our Jack Russell did not throw up. None of our four dogs have ever been sick, they have very solid, healthy stools (unless they eat a sock), and have never vomited or had any other stomach issues. They visit the vet about every 3 months for well baby checkups and are all healthy.
We love Blue Buffalo. We especially love that Blue Buffalo offers an incentive of a free bag of dog food with 10 UPC’s. We spend about $200 a month in dog food because of the size of three of our dogs (the Great Dane eats almost 8 cups of food a day. She is still a growing girl). It does not take us long to get 10 UPC’s, and we get about two free bags of food a month.
I think we all just got our answer re: BB Foods, yesterday they were forced to admit, under oath, that they do use chicken byproducts after advertising / claiming they don’t. They are liars.
yes they are. should be out of business. made my dog sick.
From where are the synthetic nutrients sourced? Are food ingredients high quality, human grade? Why are synthetics required if the base food ingredients are high quality? I’ve used Bona-Fido for years just to get away from the synthetics.
Blue is a marketing scam. Misleading product claims (check out the Purina successful lawsuit over contents) who outsources all production to other companies that sometimes use products from China and markets it falsely at a high price point. Made my dog sick.
Been using the same Blue Buffalo food for 3 years with great results. Last bag has caused diarrhea, first in one dog, and a week later in the second. Moved both to rice and boiled chicken waiting on new brand of food to be delivered. Very disappointed as I currently have over 30 lbs. of the Blue Buffalo remaining.
I have an Akita puppy, born 7-20-15, he was on Blue Wilderness Puppy (2-4.5lb bags), then I switched him to Blue Wilderness Large Breed Puppy. The first bag of Large Breed (24lb.) everything was fine. Yesterday I purchased and fed from the second bag (24lb.) of large breed puppy and the second feeding of the day he threw up in my floor (he has never thrown up). Today I fed him again and took him out for his morning potty and his stool was very loose, within an hour later he spit up the food again, not all of it as with the first time, maybe half. I have also noted that the color of the food in the new bag is lighter in color and the pellets are smaller. There is no doubt a visible difference in the food compared to the first bag…. I have kept each bag I have purchased.
I can CONFIRM that something has changed in the Wilderness Grain Free Chicken recipe. I had some of the prior food remaining in the bottom of the container where I store it. I went to pour in the new bag purchased on November 14th and the kibble was noticeably LIGHTER in color, the smell of the kibble smelled like CHEAP kibble and there were hardly any of the lifesource bits in it. I fed it to my dogs since the evening of the 14th. Now, 2 days later, my one dog refused his food this morning and my other dog who is battling nasal cancer is noticeably WORSE after having a dramatic improvement last week after putting on a holistic treatment plan.
I have decided to return the other bag I have to the store and throw out this batch and start giving them only WHOLE food made as a stew in the crock pot from now on.
I switched both my healthy dogs ( 7&4) to blue buffalo lamb and rice when a new pup came into the home. In less then 1.5yrs all 3 dogs have developed tumors and 2 of the 3 now have cancer. Odd to blame the food but since the only change in the dogs environment/ lifestyle was the food almost have to point to that.
I was looking at Blue Buffalo as a new dog food for my three girls, however, after reading the comments here I have decided to stay with our present dog food. We have seen this before at our house and do not want to risk it again!
My 11yo wiener dog did have a problem once with a new bag of dog food (not BB) and I immediately stopped feeding it to her….luckily she survived. I worried over her and watched her for 24 hrs….no more bloody stools, she ate her next meal & played as usual….I threw that dry dog food out!!! She is now a 16year old lady and watches over the two younger females in our house!
Trust me and your dog…. if an animal refuses to eat from a new bag of food or anything you want to feed them, something is wrong with it! Take them to the vet if vomiting, bloody diarrhea, or any of their symptoms continue or get worse….take the bag of the new food with you so the vet can see it.
The dog food manufacturer has a responsibly to produce a product that lives up to its advertising at the very least and should respond to inquiries or notifications of a product problem….if they do not, buy elsewhere and tell your friends and family to save them the heartache of losing their four footed friend.
My daughter’s puppy had a horrible reaction to the dry food. In a short time she had very bad gas, diarrhea, dark urine, bad breath, and became lethargic. VERY SCARY and so sad for the pup. She has started feeling better immediately after discontinuing the Blue Buffalo. We hope and pray no permanent damage has been done to her system. This is NOT the quality good it is claimed to be. It’s unsafe.
Our Boston Terrier has Cushings disease. Which Blue Buffalo can she eat?
I’ve 2 cats and 1 dog (small breed). My cats have been on BB for 7 years, my dog for 3 years. Around 8 months ago, ACROSS THE BOARD, they all started backing away from their BB food, and prior to this, they loved it and it proved beneficial for their health. Something definitely has changed. What are the odds that at the same time, dog and cats no longer want their food?! I’m seriously considering preparing from scratch. Lastly, I noticed a pine like smell to the canned salmon (the last food rejected by my cats), and now my male cat is leaving his dry salmon kibble (his absolute fav for years). I plan to discuss the pine like smell with the company, and to announce that our family is leaving the brand. Also, I’ve been wondering if halal meat is now being used and would animals reject it due to smell/taste, surely this type of slaughter saturates the tissue with a lot of adrenal (fear) hormones which will not al cook out.
My doggy of 2 eats Blue Buffalo products since he was born. He doesn’t have any problem and loved BB treats. He eats chicken with brown rice for small adult dogs.
Started feeding my two boxers a male and female age 9 Blue for seniors. After one bag my female started wetting in her sleep and urinating at least twice as much if not more. My male is also urinating just as much as my female. I believe it is this dog food. Going to vet’s tomorrow. I hope it’s not to late after what I have read on the internet about this dog food. Upset!
Both my dogs have become very sick vomiting diarrhea with blood vet. Had me do rice and chicken both stop vomiting they haven’t yet had bowel movements so don’t know about that yet but I’ve been thinking it’s there food blue wilderness freedom chicken not happy at this point still doin research
With respect to Blue Buffalo, or most commercial pet foods in general, the underlying problem is always the same. Corporate profits will always trump pet safety. The history of the industry has proven that quality ingredients can be skimped on in favor of well crafted advertising and marketing campaigns. Blue Buffalo is a prime example of this. Especially when you consider Bill Bishop background in marketing and advertising. While his intentions to start the company were honorable at the end of the day Blue Buffalo in my opinion is no different than all the rest. The recall history will prove that. Regardless of all the warm and fuzzy advertisements. When a company outsources production to large pet food manufactures that import ingredients from places like China, the end result is the same..A food that has a high probability of causing harm to your pets.
For the last 5 years I have been feeding my pet a food from a small company which is the antithesis of most pet food companies, in terms of ingredients,(sourced in the USA) freshness, and quality control. The unique thing about the food is because it ships direct, the food is only 6 to 8 weeks old, making it the freshest in the marketplace. Best part is all food has a batch number so in the event of an issue with a batch of food there is a trail leading to the end consumer. However thanks to the amazing dedication and attention to detail there has never been an issue in the 16 yrs in business.
After seeing the positive results in my pet I proudly chose to represent the company and take the message of holistic health to the masses. The health of our pets should never be determined by how much money companies can spend on advertising campaigns..
Blue Buffalo Basics Senior made one of my dogs deathly ill. He is currently recovering all the vomiting. My other dog refused to eat it. My son’s dog also ended up at urgent care after eating another variety of BB. Don’t risk your dog’s health!
Your recall list is not up to date. Blue Buffalo has a June 2016 recall on 1 grain free pine and a 2015 recall on treats.

REAALLY? Just when were you going to tell everyone about this? This is ridiculous!
Sorry I put my 1 st. Blog on blur buffalo wilderness. This is my story. I had a litter of boxer puppies in june. I had one pup with a split lip. Needles to say she was unable to nurse so I started bottle feeding with formula for week and a half. This wasn’t satisfying her. So I tried soaking blue buffalo puppy and formula, put it into blender added more formula . (This was week 2 1/2 at 1 1/2 I tried rice cereal.) Needless to say she flourished. No lose stools no more 2-3 hr. Feedings I have been bottle feeding pups for 40yrs. I have never had a pup (she was 2/3 smaller then her litter mates. At 4 months she has caught up. Most to all bottle pups won,t catch up until the 2nd 6 months of life. I feed blue to all my boxers.
I purchased the blue buffalo adult orange bag 11/5/16 and my dogs (Sheltie and chiweeny) have had diarrhea and vomiting. I used this brand in the passed with no problems the only difference is my last bag was health weight.
I trusted my dogs to blue buffalo for 2 years, but never again after the dogs got bad diarrhea, vomiting and would not eat
it anymore. $400 dollars worth of blood test later, and the vet said it was the food. Switched them to Science Diet and have not had a problem since. Don’t feed your dog this crap!
