Best Dog Food for Small Dogs?

Akita Inu Puppy SleepLooking at a small dog like a Dachshund or a Pomeranian, you may be tempted to think that they don’t need to eat very much. In reality, however, a 5-pound Pomeranian actually requires more calories per pound than a 150-pound Great Dane!

Nutritional Needs of Small Dogs

Though they may be little, small breed dogs often have a great deal of energy – it takes a lot of calories to support all that energy! This being the case, foods formulated for small breed dogs should be rich in calories and nutrient-dense to accommodate for their small stomachs and quick metabolisms. Look for formulas with high protein and fat (for extra energy) as well as a digestible source of carbohydrate. You should also find a formula that provides plenty of Vitamin B to help support the metabolism. In regard to the food itself, look for a smaller dry kibble that is designed for the smaller mouths of small breed dogs.

In addition to their high energy needs, small breed dogs also tend to be the pickiest eaters. To combat this, try to stick to a regular routine in regarding to feeding your dog. Avoid giving your dog too many treats or table scraps because he might start to refuse his kibble in favor of the other foods. If your dog becomes too fussy or starts to have a reaction to his food, make sure you take him to the veterinarian for a check-up.

How Much to Feed Small Dogs

The amount of food your dog needs depends primarily on his breed and activity level. Choose a commercial food that is formulated for small breeds and then follow the recommendations on the package. Keep in mind that these recommendations may not be right for all dogs, so you may need to adjust your dog’s portion size up or down after a few weeks. It is important to avoid overfeeding your dog because this can result in obesity which may lead to a host of other health problems.
