Brief Overview

Party Animal Pet Food, headquartered in West Hollywood, California, makes mostly canned foods for dogs and cats. They have been in business since 2006. According to the company, they want to make “the most scrumptious & healthiest pet food from our kitchen for our furry children.” They use some organic ingredients such as organic oils, fruits, and vegetables, and good quality protein sources including some organic meats. Their foods are “hand-crafted” in small batches. Their foods are made in the U.S. and all ingredients come from the U.S. except for venison and lamb that come from New Zealand. They use no corn, wheat, or soy and their foods have no carrageenan. Party Animal uses no artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives in their foods. Their cans are human-grade though the 13-ounce dog food cans do contain a trace amount of BPA, well below the level considered acceptable by the FDA. At this time the company has two different lines of canned dog food: Party Animal and Cocolicious. They also make Party Animal dry dog food with 70 percent organic ingredients.

Who Manufactures Party Animal Dog Food?

According to various online sources, Party Animal’s canned foods are manufactured by Evanger’s in Illinois. Some pet lovers see this as a negative since Evanger’s has had issues with rusty cans and has something of a reputation for not adhering to guaranteed analyses. The company’s dry dog food is (or was in 2010) manufactured in Minnesota.

Organic pet foods are growing in popularity along with organic foods in general. It’s becoming easier for pet food companies to source many ingredients now at reasonable prices so they can make them available to pet food buyers. Party Animal is one company benefiting from this increased interest in organic foods. (You can read about other popular organic dog foods in this helpful article.)

If you’re new to organic pet foods, there are different kinds, based on the amount of organic ingredients in the food. In general, organic ingredients do not contain pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, antibiotics, growth hormones, GMOs, or other artificial additives. Farms have to be free from prohibited substances for 36 months prior to the first organic harvest. Meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy have to come from animals that are fed organic, pesticide-free grains and the animals can’t be given antibiotics or growth hormones. (You can find lots of information about organic farming on the USDA web site.)

There are also strict regulations about organic labeling for foods and pet foods so people will know what they are buying. Products labeled USDA organic are required to contain 95-100% certified organic ingredients. Products labeled made with organic ingredients must contain a minimum of 70% certified organic ingredients. The certifying agency symbol may be used on the packaging. However, the USDA symbol may not be used under the “made with organic ingredients” rule. Party Animal dry dog food is formulated under the “made with organic ingredients” classification. Oregon Tilth is an organic certification agency that operates under the national organic standards federal law. Oregon Tilth inspects the production facility where Party Animal’s canned foods are made and reviews the ingredients used in their organic formulas. A complete breakdown of their formulas, including sources of each ingredient, is required as part of the agency’s review and approval process to certify that the federal organic standards are met.

As with many companies that use organic ingredients, some of the meat proteins used by Party Animal are not certified organic. Either they are not available in organic form, available in small quantities, or the price is probably cost-prohibitive for a pet food company. According to Party Animal, although they do not use certified organic duck, lamb, salmon, or venison, they do use free-range duck, free-range, grass-fed lamb and venison, and wild-caught salmon. All of their fruits and vegetables are organic.

At this time Party Animal makes 10 Party Animal Original canned formulas – six organic and eight grain free (they overlap). They also make 14 Cocolicious formulas – six organic and all grain free. The Cocolicious formulas all contain coconut oil. They also make Party Animal dry dog food which is 70 percent organic.

(Note that the Party Animal web site is very colorful and fun but it’s somewhat challenging if you are a word-oriented person. It’s a little haphazard if you are trying to sort the foods and find information.)

We did not find an AAFCO statement for Party Animal’s foods on their site. However, we did find the following statement on a pet food site: ALL Party Animal flavors are formulated to meet the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for all life stages.

As you can see, most of the canned foods are very similar. The guaranteed analyses for all of the canned foods is exactly the same which, in our experience, is unusual, especially considering that the foods have different proteins, different veggies, some have brown rice, some have coconut oil, etc. It’s possible they can all have the same guaranteed analysis and calories. It’s just very unusual. Compare Tikipet’s canned dog foods which have widely varying nutritional figures and calories.

We should mention when you are reading Party Animal’s ingredients, the liver in the food will be the same as the main meat protein. Many of the Cocolicious foods that are 95 percent meat look very similar to each other in terms of ingredients. They feature meat, a meat broth made from the same meat, and liver from the same meat, plus coconut oil and guar gum. We have no problem with guar gum, especially in foods that do not contain carrageenan. It comes from guar beans and it’s used as a food stabilizer or texturizer to help foods hold their shape. The FDA considers it to be safe. It is a soluble fiber and it can (not will) interfere with the absorption of antioxidants. Certain people need to be careful about eating it, especially in large amounts. It’s possible some dogs could be sensitive to it and have some flatulence. However, it should not bother most dogs in the small amounts used in canned dog food.

Overall, it looks like Party Animal uses very good ingredients in their foods. We’re a little uncomfortable about some of the Cocolicious foods that are labeled 95 percent meat, especially since they still have the same guaranteed analyses as the other canned foods. You would expect these foods to have a higher protein percentage listed. This is another reason we are a little skeptical about the guaranteed analyses and calories posted for the foods on the web site. It would also be nice if Party Animal posted the individual AAFCO statements for their foods. Many dog foods that are 95 percent meat are sold as toppers or to be mixed with other ingredients. They are not a complete and balanced meal by themselves. Or they might be for a maintenance diet. They are not usually an all life stage food. However, Party Animal only makes reference to “all life stage” foods on their web site, without providing any AAFCO nutritional statements.

We’ll put that issue aside for now and look at one of Party Animal’s foods in detail.

Party Animal Organic Kickin’ Chicken Dog Food Review

According to online customer reviews, Party Animal Organic Kickin’ Chicken is one of Party Animal’s most popular foods so we thought we would take a closer look at it. The food is a pâté. It’s grain free and made with organic chicken, organic fruits, and organic vegetables. It has the USDA Organic label. It contains no corn, wheat, or soy; and no artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives.

The first five ingredients in this food are Organic Chicken, Organic Chicken Broth, Organic Liver, Organic Artichoke, Organic Blueberries. That’s a lot of organic! Let’s just stipulate that organic is good and if you are looking for organic dog food, these ingredients are a definite bonus.

The chicken in the food still contains moisture before cooking so you have to consider that it will have less weight when the moisture cooks out. Chicken normally contains about 70 percent water, 18 percent protein, and 5 percent fat before cooking. It has between 56-80 percent protein, depending on the parts used. Chicken is a great source of protein for dogs. It’s also a good source of vitamin B6, niacin, and phosphorus.

Since this is a canned food it also contains a lot of moisture (78 percent in the guaranteed analysis). This food uses organic chicken broth for canning. Party Animal uses broths that match the meat proteins in the food which is very desirable. Many dog foods use water or “natural” flavor for broth which could be just about anything. Chicken broth has good flavor and some of the same nutrients found in chicken.

The food also contains organic liver. Party Animal points out that their foods always use the same kind of liver that is found as the main meat ingredient in the food. So the organic liver in this food is chicken. Chicken liver is high in protein and great source of thiamin, zinc, copper, manganese, folate, phosphorus, iron, vitamin A, C, B6, B12, riboflavin, niacin, and the list goes on.

What liver is being used in your canned pet food?

All Party Animal™ canned dog & cat food is single source protein, which means the liver in Party Animal™ recipes come from the protein source that is being used in that particular flavor. All COCOLICIOUS™ 95% meat canned dog food is single source protein, which means the liver in these recipes come from the protein source that is being used in that particular flavor. All COCOLICIOUS™ dual source protein canned dog & cat food is dual source protein, which means the liver in these recipes recipes come from both protein sources that are being used in that particular flavor.

This food also contains organic artichoke. This is not a very common dog food ingredient. According to the information we found, artichoke in dog foods usually refers to the Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus), a species of sunflower native to eastern North America, and not the bulbous green artichoke favored by humans. The Jerusalem artichoke is not really an artichoke but it is a dietary fiber and source of prebiotic material. It’s the root of the Jerusalem artichoke that’s harvested, dried, and ground into a powder for use in pet food. The root contains the carbohydrate inulin which should be familiar to many pet lovers.

The fifth ingredient in the food is organic blueberries. Blueberries are high in vitamin C and fiber. They are a good source of antioxidants. Many dogs like the flavor of blueberries in treats, cookies, and dog foods.

Since this is a canned food it doesn’t contain a lot of other ingredients but it does have organic apples and organic zucchini – good sources of vitamins and dietary fiber. The food also contains organic olive oil. Olive oil is a good source of antioxidants such as vitamin E and phytonutrients. Most people agree that it’s beneficial for a dog’s skin and coat. The food also contains chelated minerals which are easier for dogs to absorb.

We’ve already mentioned the organic guar gum that Party Animal uses in their foods. And the fact that they use human-grade 13-ounce cans for their dog foods.

We think this food looks very good and we don’t see any problems with it.

We think the ingredients of the Party Animal foods look very good. Many of the Cocolicious foods also look good. We do have some questions about the Cocolicious foods with 95 percent meat and whether or not they are complete and balanced under AAFCO guidelines or which life stage they are intended for. We would feel a little more confident about all of the foods if Party Animal placed AAFCO statements on the site.If you buy these canned foods, do be aware that the fat content is quite high. Your dog will probably enjoy them very much but if s/he has any problems with fat or has sensitive digestion issues, they might pose difficulties. If your dog needs to count calories, be careful how much you feed of these foods. With such high fat content, it would be easy for most dogs to gain weight quickly eating these foods.
