Canidae Dog Food
Brief Overview
Canidae is a premium holistic pet food brand that offers a variety of healthy, natural, and holistic dog food product lines. This family-owned company (Canidae Pet Food Corporation) has been making premium dog food since 1997.
Who manufactures Canidae?
Even though Canidae Pet Food Corporation still owns Canidae dog food, they brought Diamond Pet Foods on board to manufacture their grain-free dog and cat kibble in 2005. American Nutrition manufactures many of the company’s other pet foods.Today, Canidae Pet Food Corporation is secretive about their outsourcing. In 2007, Canidae customer service representative claimed that the company made their own food in their own facilities.
Even though they opened a new pet food manufacturing facility in Brownwood, Texas in 2012, they still have Diamond Pet Foods on board. This is proven by the recall Diamond Pet Foods issued in May 2012 that included Canidae dog food.

Latest Recalls List (From newest to oldest):
- In May 2012, Diamond Pet Foods issued a voluntary recall of all the brands of dog food that was produced at their Gaston, South Carolina plant. Canidae was one of them. The reason for the voluntary recall is that 49 humans in 20 different states (as well as 2 people in Canada) were infected with Salmonella. It was found that the Salmonella outbreak was caused by the dog food produced in the South Carolina plant when the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development detected Salmonella in a bag of dry dog food produced by Diamond during a routine inspection. You can read more on this Salmonella outbreak here.

Canidae Reviews
Canidae takes pride in the fact that all of their ingredients are human-grade and made in the United States.Even though they won’t share a lot of information on where they outsource their food production, we know that they use USDA-inspected meat and that all of their formulations are produced in USDA, FDA, and AAFCO-approved facilities. Not only does Canidae use strict testing procedures, but they also use natural preservatives and high-quality grains, fruits, and vegetables from local producers.
Most of Canidae’s dog food formulas are formulated for all life stages. Their dog food comes concentrated with different protein sources, including beef, bison, duck, lamb, salmon, and fish meal. However, some dog owners take issue with the fact that there’s an unusually high rice content in some of Canidae’s dog food formulas. The low concentration of vegetable proteins found in those same formulas allows for easier digestion in older or more food-sensitive dogs, so some dog owners are willing to overlook the high rice content.
Canidae dog food is pricey, but you know what they say: you get what you pay for. Canidae uses high-quality human-grade ingredients, so if you have to fork over $50 for a 24-pound bag of Canidae Grain-Free PURE Elements to ensure that your dog stays healthy, then so be it. However, we have Canidae dog food coupons that can help you save a few bucks. They can be found at the bottom of this page.

Our Review Canidae Grain Free PURE Elements
Grain-Free PURE Elements is probably Canidae’s healthiest line of dog food. Let’s take a look at PURE Elements with Fresh Lamb.
Fresh lamb is the number one ingredient in this formula. It’s completely grain-free, gluten-free, and without antibiotics, hormones, or fillers. In fact, this formula has only 10 key ingredients to assist with digestion issues in older or food-sensitive dogs. The carbohydrates come from sweet potatoes, peas, and chickpeas. This premium dog food product is ideal for dogs with food sensitivities, given its small ingredient list.

Our English Bulldog has been eating Canidae Pure Bison. We did not notice that the last bag we bought said “new recipe”. He started vomiting and could not keep down the new food. We examined the bag and realized the kibble was considerably smaller, and we also noticed the “new recipe” notice on the bag. The pet store took back the food and recommended Natural Balance duck and sweet potato. He is not eating this food well and we are concerned. Why the change in the recipe? He was doing so well on that food. We are concerned about his health. He is very important to our family.
I read today that Proctor and Gamble bought Canidae and a lot of long time customers have noticed diarrhea and other symptoms seemingly since this spring/summer 2014. The suspicion is that P&G purchased the company and the quality is declining. Scary and disappointing if so. Too bad, I had just bought my first bag last week. So far no diarrhea in my Jack Russell but I am going to keep an eye on her and go home and inspect the bag. It’s only been a few days since I switched. I have just finished my first bag and no complaints but reading all these reviews I am scared to buy another and don’t know what to feed them now:(
Try Fromm or blue buffalo both of
Them are great! They have had little recalls although they are a little bit more expensive then canidae. Fromm is my number one recommendation for you!
Wow! I am so glad to read the above messages. I have been a long time fan of Canidae (8 years) and have used the senior/weight loss formula for several of those years. My dog has had few if any bouts of vomitting or diarrhea over the years. However, since buying my most recent bag this summer, my dog has had terrible, mucousy diarrhea. I had her checked to ova and parasites and that was negative. I kept thinking it was due to the new bag of food, but there were no recalls. So maybe it’s the “new recipe”? I think it’s time to find a new dog food.
We are expirancing the same with the gross poop!! We tested our dogs as well and they both tested negitive for parasites! 2016 I am switching! I am glad I am reading this!! Scary! And sad!!
My 10-year old Chihuahua has heart disease and gets very sick with any small disruption in her diet. My vet recommended that I put her on Canidae Platinum canned which she has done very well with the past 6 months. However, for about a week now she shakes after she eats the canned food. After reading this website and consumer affairs website about the Canidae and the change in their recipe…I will be switching to a different food for her. Why would they change a product that people seemed to be satisifed with????…..profit.
I have a Boston Terrorist that has chronic ear issues. I just paid 93 bucks for 25 lbs of Hills z/d. I have had him on this for about a yr. I personally think it is junk. Ear drops, itching,…HELP, don’t care what the cost is
“Boston terrorist” thanks for the typo, made me laugh!
Canidae review
I did a lot of research on dog foods before I purchased Canidae for our new labradoodle puppy. Canidae was recommended to me by the local pet store, and I read lots of websites claiming that it was a top-notch grain-free food. I bought the all-life stages dry food from Amazon.com in August 2014 and the reviews looked great. Our puppy had completely firm/healthy stool before we started him on Canidae. However, once on the food for a little we started noticing that he was having loose stool, and we couldn’t seem to get it under control. I took him into the vet, and our vet gave him some medication, but it only helped temporarily.
We never associated his loose stools with the food, so we bought a new bag of Canidae in November 2014. Our dog began having uncontrollable diarrhea as soon as he started the new bag. It was horrible and becoming a regular thing. We thought it was the wide variety of treats we were giving him, so we cut out all dog treats, but we weren’t seeing any improvements. Our dog never had accidents in the house, but began having horrible, watery diarrhea all of the house and in his crate. It was clear he couldn’t control it. We put him on a bland diet and bought supplements, and all of his symptoms improved. We started integrating Canidae back into his diet, and the uncontrollable diarrhea began again. I had to take off work one day because he needed to go out every 30 minutes to an hour. He was so miserable, so I scheduled a vet appointment for the next day. I decided to do some digging in the mean time and Googled “Canidae causes..” and Google automatically filled in “diarrhea,” which was my first indication that there were definitely others that were dealing with the same problem.
I found a forum with tons of stories and complaints just like mine, and I was horrified to see all of the people who have seen the EXACT same symptoms in their dogs. If Canidae is making dogs extremely sick, something needs to be done. I called Amazon and got a complete refund. I will NEVER use Canidae again. The amount of money that I have spent on supplements, vet appointments, etc. for my dog trying to figure out what was making him sick (not to mention the horrible pain he has been in) could have been completely avoided. He now eats Regal Sensi Bites and is doing beautifully! We are so happy to see our happy/healthy puppy back!
I feel horrible that I put my dog through this and want to caution anyone thinking about buying this food.
I have been using Purina Pro Sport for my 1.5 year old Lab. His December 2014 food shipment came with a bag of Canidea all life stages – I thought I might gradually mix the two and try it out. My dog became instantly ill – blood and mucus diarreah – even from just half a cup of this mixture. Took him off it, Gave his belly a rest. Dewormed and consulted a vet then gave the food another try. The SAME THING happened. His friend came over _ a hearty eater and wouldnt touch the food at all! Not certain what’s actually in the food but my dog has never had a reaction like that before outside of one time when he tried another Diamond product. This is concerning
I put my senior rescue lab mix on Canidae Thinking I would improve her life span. She is 11yrs old. I used the silver wet can. 4 cans had black mold. I emailed the company no response. I am disappointed that the pet store didn’t replace the cans and they are the ones who recommended I use it. Well now She has kidney disease liver problems and dehydration problems. We are waiting for an ultrasound on Monday. The vets are so cautious to blame the food. My 2 other rescue pups lived to be 15 and 16 eating iams and Costco brand. I feel terrible and don’t know what to do to prove its the food. she is now on id kidney formula when she can hold it down. sorry about the rambling but I feel so guilty that my girl is so sick.
Wow PETCO is continually recommending Canidae food to its customers including me my dog has had no problem with it but now I don’t want to feed it to her any more she has to eat grain free food with salmon. Food allergies any suggestions
I live in California, and talking to local pet store owners, their Canidae is still made/produced by Diamond Pet Foods in Northern CA.
Just thought I’d share that.
Hi, I have just purchased a bag at Petco, after the recommendation of one of their employees. I did not know it was made by Diamond. I have also tried the Orijen, it’s more expensive, but if you order online, you get a 20% discount, if you sign up for automated shipping. I have a 18 month old Pitbull, picky eater, but he likes it. It is made from farm raised animals and has lots of nutrition without byproducts. I rather pay a little more for food, than going to have a high Vet bill. When I opened the bag, I could smell the richness of the food, yummi.
So I just bought the Canidae Grain free pure elements for my two dogs and now with the reviews I just saw should I be worried I had to switch foods because my female old English bulldog was having diarrhea with our last food and my masks as well after giving the the pure elements they seem better but now I am kinda worried..
Our vet informed us that dogs need to have grain in their diets. I feed both of my dogs Kirkland lamb dry food and they also get a wet mixture, also Kirkland, and have had absolutely no problems with the food. Diarrhea does occur sometimes but it’s usually due to other causes and during those times, we switch to a home cooked bland diet for several days which does the trick. If you bring your dogs o a park where other dogs have left their poop droppings, your dog can instantly pick up any parasite or other condition. It’s not always the food.
My 9 y.o. poodle/spaniel mix had 4 discs removed by a Neurosurgeon in February. When he came home I put him on Canidae with a tablespoon of organic pumpkin and he LOVES IT…has been healing very well, more peppy and energetic…I can’t see why there are so many negative comments.
I am surprised to see so many bad things happened to people’s dogs. I have heard that the food in different regions comes from different plants. We are in Houston, Tx. My dog has progressively climbed the dog food ladder going from Bil-jac, to Iams, to Blue Buffalo, to Wellness, to Acana, and now to Canidae Pure Sea. This is the first dog food that his stool has been firm enough to pick up and his hair is shinier. Also he used to vomit way more often. I found out later that it may be a chicken allergy, so no poultry for him. I’ve read chicken is a common allergy with dogs and so many foods have it! We haven’t had a problem with this food and I pray that doesn’t change as I have yet to see any other salmon/ or red fish type dog food on the market.
Funny, after the melamine crisis I researched dog foods to exhaustion. I finally came up with Canidae and was very happy with it up until recently. I now have a dog with bladder stones and the same dog has loose stool on a regular basis. I also have two others who have occasional bouts of vomiting. Poor guy has been on and off antibiotics for the past few months. I never associated it with the food until I had to change his food to help eliminate his crystals in his urine. Almost overnight back to solid poo, even on antibiotics! Looking at this thread I am ashamed I didn’t think of the food sooner as I should have known better. Canidae, we are done with you, we are on to Earthborn Holistic.
We started the canidea large breed puppy formula about 2 weeks ago and the dog treats and have not had any problems. We have a 8 week old pit bull.
Hi, e have four dogs a variety of breeds and sizes. We have been f ending Canidae food for several years now and re very pleased with the food nod and he Helton of our animals. The last bag we just purchased however our dogs will not eat. Suddenly they are all leaving their food untouched in their bowl, Very unusual for this group. I was researching to see if there have been any recent recalls. Any advice?
Sincerely
Toci
We have a three year old Malinois who will eat anything that is edible, but nothing agreed with his stomach until I found Canidae Grain-free Pure Land with Bison. He now has consistent firm stools. Our previous Malinois was on Purina Pro Plan so we tried that and several of the expensive and popular brands before finding success with Canidae.
A word of advice before switching dog food brands. I have found through trial and error that he does well on Bison and Lamb, so it may not be the dog food brand, but the formula that will be the culprit. Look for formulas with limited ingredients.
Where is Canidae dog food made? They do not show made in the US on their new packaging or on their website. Customer service says it is made in the US – i tend not to believe this since it is not advertised as US made. What is the truth and should this be a concern?
I have just returned to the retailer the bag of Canidae senior weight control food. I have had to throw out most of it because my little dogs wouldn’t eat it and it kept souring with the additions. I have had to mix different kinds of wet food or gravy with it in order for them to eat it so what is the point of weight control? The retailer was upset at the return but it says on the bag it’s guaranteed so I returned it and won’t buy another. We have switched to FirstMate senior weight control and they are eating that product. It has an appetizing smell whereas yours smells like old flour and nothing appealing.
I have been feeding both of my large dogs Canidae Senior dog food for years. I have not had any issue with this product. If you are switching dog foods, you should be doing this slowly. If you take their old food away and give them a bowl of a new food, they can easily get diarrhea or upset stomach. I always have slowly transitioned them with new foods, 25% new and 75% old food, and so on until they were eating only the new food. I have a very picky eater and he seems to enjoy Canidae and this has helped a lot with his arthritis. I do not give him any glucosamine supplements because there is an efficient amount in the senior formula. I recommend this dog food and I am picky when it comes to dry dog foods.
Just this past summer we switched our dogs dry food from Purina One over to Canidae Lamb and Rice formula. We noticed that our dog started vomiting and had terrible, mucousy diarrhea. We had her checked out at the vets and all was OK. It was suggested that we try another dry food so we switched back to Purina One. The vomiting and diarrhea stopped. Is there a particular ingredient added that would cause this condition to happen?
Regards,
Just to add my experiences. I had switched over to Canidae from Taste of the Wild and my dogs did ok for a bag or two. Then my smooth collie started with ear infections and constant anal gland issues. Same ear and gland inflamed each time (right side) so the two issues seemed linked. I gave up on the Canidae and transitioned to Eagle Pack food the chicken and pork formula. Happy happy dogs and no issues, no ear infections and no more bum scooting. I highly recommend Eagle Pack.
My 11 year old golden retriever has been eating all varieties of Canidae since she was 3 months old. I bought a new bag of Pure grain free bison Canidae 2 months ago and she started getting huge blisters and sores on her face. I stopped feeding it to her and took her to the Vet. I was told that she had reaction to the protein content in the food. After two weeks it cleared up under the vet’s care. I think the new formula now that a new company bought Canidae has additives that produced a horrific reaction. The store took it back and we exchanged for the Pure grain free salmon and the same sores started to reappear and I stopped feeding it to her immediately. Sadly we are no longer Canidae customers. The new formula is toxic to my dog. I do not recommend.
Who told you Canidae was bought out? I work for a local pet shop and talk with their rep almost monhthly. We have not heard anything about this? Can you post a link where you got your info please. I do think they changed their food(despite the bag ingredients listed as same) because my one on wild boar has actually had same exact issues you are describing blisters bumps ext. She allergic to most everything except pork. When merrick was sold they changed their pork meal to lamb and she broke out badly, but I saw on the bag the change and then went to Canidae which was pork only.Thanks.
