Victor Dog Food
Victor Pet Food is made by Mid America Pet Food, founded in 2007. Mid America is a family-owned and operated company located in East Texas. According to the company, more than 80 percent of the ingredients used in their foods come from a 200-mile radius of their facility.
In 2014 Trinity Hunt Partners, a Dallas-based private equity firm, acquired Mid America Pet Food to recapitalize the business and “position it for future growth.” Mid America sells their pet food through a network of independent distributors and online pet food sellers. Brands made by Mid are Nature’s Select Dog and Cat Food, Kahoots Dog and Cat Food, and Evangers Dry Dog and Cat Food at their facility. They also make pet food for some other companies.

Victor Dog Food Review
Victor’s popularity has skyrocketed over the past decade, and the brand is now a leader in the dog food market. Victor offers a total of 16 formulas, including foods for highly active and sporting dogs, normally active dogs, and grain-free options for dogs with allergies or sensitivities.
Victor foods are touted for their high-quality ingredients, all of which are free of corn, wheat, soy, gluten, and grain by-products, as well as artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives. Each recipe is also packed with top-notch meat protein from either poultry or fish, creating a flavor that pups love. Aside from taste, however, dog owners openly praise Victor formulas for the health benefits, quality, and integrity of the company.
Victor prioritizes transparency, openly detailing exactly what is in each bag of kibble and where their ingredients come from. As far as dog food companies go, this level of transparency is rare, which is likely a reason Victor has become one of the top-selling brands in such a short period of time.

AAFCO Statement
All Victor foods either meet or exceed the AAFCO’s nutritional standards, but not every formula contains a nutritional adequacy statement. Some of Victor’s foods state that they have ingredients that are not recognized as essential nutrients by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles. However, if the formula meets the AAFCO’s standards, it will always clearly state it on the bag.
In-Depth Look At Victor GF Yukon River Salmon & Sweet Potato
One of the most popular Victor formulas is the Grain Free Yukon River Salmon & Sweet Potato Dog Food. This all life stages food is loaded with health benefits and is a consumer favorite. Let’s take a look at each of the first five ingredients to give you a better idea of what this formula has to offer.
The first ingredient, Salmon is a source of omega 3 fatty acids, as well as healthy protein (46%) and fat (54%). While it is the first ingredient, it does contain moisture, so the actual amount of salmon is less than we’d prefer. However, it’s still a great source of Thiamin, Niacin, Vitamin B6, Phosphorus, Vitamin B12, and Selenium.
The second ingredient, Ocean Fish Meal, is a concentrated form of fish protein that contains various kinds of fish. It’s high in healthy protein and fat, serving as another source of omega-3 fatty acids.
Next, sweet potatoes are a solid alternative to grains and a nutritional source of carbs. They also provide fiber, B6 Vitamins, Potassium, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and Manganese
The fourth ingredient, peas, take the place of grains in grain-free dog foods because they can be easier to digest. However, peas usually have a higher protein percentage than grains, and some dog food companies prefer to use them because they are less expensive than using more meat protein. They provide some other nutrients such as Vitamin A, Riboflavin, Niacin, Vitamin B6, Folate, Magnesium, Phosphorus, and Copper.
Lastly, the fifth ingredient is canola oil, another source of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. These two fatty acids need to be present in a good proportion to be healthy for your dog. It’s not a case where more is always better.
Key Benefits
- Probiotics to help digestion
- Glucosamine and Chondroitin for joint support
- Prebiotics and amino acids to help your dog absorb minerals more easily
- Alfalfa meal for protein and calcium
- Montmorillonite, a kind of clay that is supposed to improve digestion and remove toxic ingredients in the body
Guaranteed Analysis
This food has above average protein (33.6%) and average fat (16.5%) compared to most super premium dog foods. The fiber content (4.2%) is also average for most kibbles; and the carb percentage (33.2%) is very moderate compared to many grain free dog foods.
We think that Victor GF Yukon River Salmon & Sweet Potato looks like a very good food. If your dog has allergies to some of the common meat and poultry proteins, or you are looking for a good grain free food with higher protein and moderate fat, this is definitely a food to consider.
Where To Buy Victor Dog Food
You can buy Victor on Chewy.com and other online pet food sites. You can also check the “Find A Store”/”Find A Dealer” page on the Victor website.
If you are interested in one of Victor’s foods, remember to read the labels and check the ingredients. For the most part, we think the Victor Dog Foods offer high quality, healthy options for your pup. They are also in the mid-price range for super premium pet foods – especially if you can buy them locally. Victor is sold through independent dealers so you may not be able to find the food close to you. Shipping can raise the price a little unless you are getting free shipping, but many people consider the food well worth buying online.

We also have been pleasantly surprised by the quality and apparent palatability of Victor Dog Food. Our dogs never leave a kibble,. They appear to be thriving on it. The lower mid range pricing of the food has been most helpful in keep the cost down on the eight dogs we are now feeding. I was happy to see that your review coincided with our experince.
i have been feeding Victor 3 formulas super pro plus turquoise bag for pups and breeding bitches, Beef Blue bag for active adults and Senior/ silver bag for my older retired seniors for about 2 years. I breed chihuahuas and I also have rescued big dogs. they all do well on this food I notice that they do not need to eat as much and their poo is less. It is not that inexpensive nor too expensive, but in my opinion worth the price.. I get it at a local feed store…. the formulas also mix well together….
I have been feeding my 8 month old German Shepherd Victor Nutro-Pro 38. I brought him home at 8-weeks old, the breeder and his veterinarian highly recommended Victor. He not only loves the food, he THRIVES on it. Compared to his siblings that I sometimes see at the dog park, his coat is thicker and shinier. He is head and shoulders larger than the other males, eyes are clear and bright. Stools are solid and well formed, breath is fresher than my own and he does not have a “dog smell” whatsoever.
I can not say enough praise about Victor dog food. High protein, high quality ingredients, he absolutely inhales Victor!
That being said, the price is right for a 5-star food, I can provide a premium food for my boy at a very reasonable price.
Had 5 dogs on this food, not by my choice- but having to feed my dogs with a family member due to financial issues, I had to go with it. All 5 of my dogs were pulled down so poorly that I insisted they be removed from this food after about 6 months. All of them had dry skin, were loosing clumps of hair, dull coats and were scratching like crazy! My Aussie that had a beautiful thick, shiny luxurious coat previously- was loosing it by the handfuls, literally on Victor dog food. All 5 dogs just looked horrible but mostly they just wouldn’t stop scratching and blowing out coat! Chunks from the Aussie, long haired chihuahua and Maltese! The poodle and short coat chihuahua didn’t look as bad, poodle didn’t loose much but even the plush short coat chihuahua blew coat like you wouldn’t believe.
I feel horrible for letting them go so long.
I am a 25 year retired vet technician, I knew it was the food but since I wasn’t paying for it, only so much I could do, I was very greatful and thankful for the help.
I finally convinced the family member that I suspected the food (she owns 2 of the dogs) to and we decided to switch back to a food that I had used for years. Literally, there were no more clumps of hair all over the floor (black long haired dog-and red dog-beige carpet) and they all stopped scratching , chewing and excessively licking their feet- within 5 days ! YAY!
After reviewing the label again, I’m not sure what is in the food that caused such a problem, but I am suspecting either millet, pork,
sorghum, tomato pomace, or the mono sodium
derivative as not only are none of these ingredients in their high quality food, they are totally unnecessary fillers, and one is a meat protein that is not easily digestible to canines (“pork” is a broad category) and the other is a chemical preservative- derivative(?)
No idea how this food is getting these great ratings- I read some of the other proteins
( flavors) and they also use blood meal in their food which is terrible! There is no way to regulate that and/or what animals that comes from.
I’m not sure if blood meal was snuck into the food my dogs were eating, if so- that explains it to me right there- there is your concentrated form of
stress hormones, vaccines, any diseases ( the choicest animals are not used for dog food) bacteria, pathogens, etc..sure it’s run through a sterilizer- but if you know how those work, they only do so much…
No thank you, I’ll pass on blood meal from factory farming too please.
NO MORE VICTOR DOG FOODS FOR OUR DOGS EVER! And I will tell everyone I know how poorly all our dogs did on this food!
Would you mind sharing which formula you were using? We have had good results with 2 of the grain free formulas. Thank you
What kind do you recommend?
need to find victor dog in my area .the only place that carry this food is 25 miles away. Your sale rep.needs to get busy and find a place to sale around Danville ky.
Chewy.com sells Victor at a really good price! And their delivery is pretty fast. Only took two days to get to my house. I really recommend looking at them.
About a week ago we started feeding our three dogs Victor grain free ultra pro. They ate it the first day or two, but now will not touch it. My old girl (lab) and my young shih tzu are itching like crazy. The other dog seems to be okay. $48 down the drain. I’m going back to Buffalo. Oh, I called them to ask if the alfalfa was non GMO. He stated that he didn’t know and would call me back. I’m still waiting.
I breed and compete in a variety of different sports with Australian Shepherds. My dogs all seem to do really well on Victors food. They have a huge selection of different foods. I have tried all the grain frees and we am currently feeding “High Pro Plus” because I wanted to up their fat. I have had a little bit of loose stool probably because of fat change. Its a very small kibble that soaks well in warm water. Victors is a great family owned company with their own manufacturing plant which I love. Most of their ingredients are local and they use complex minerals which have the highest digestibly on the market.
Also I forgot to mention that the “blood meal” is chicken blood which is not blood they get off the ground. Its not left over blood. They specifically collect it for their formulas higher in protein to mimic a natural diet. Their chicken is sourced 9 miles from their manufacturing facility. Animal blood is a highly digestible source of quality protein as long as it is collected correctly. 🙂
My french bulldog mix is extremely picky with his food. I’ve always had to mix in a tablespoon of wet food just to get him to eat it. Saw Victor on whim at Power Bros Pet Feed in Vallejo and asked the worker. She said people come from all different cities because their store is the only one that carries it. Price difference is comparable to Chewy.com, ($57 vs $56). Decided to give it a try and it did not disappoint. My picky dog ate this food right up and never left his plate till its done. Less shedding, shiny coat, gaining good weight and not as much teary eyes. Will keep him on this food as long as he likes it.
I would have to differ from the comment that Canola Oil is good for people. It is not. I researched this oil a while back and was very disappointed to find out how harmful it actually is to humans.
On a positive note, I really like the Victor Ultra Pro. I feed it in the rotation diet to all 5 of our dogs. They do very well on this food.
These findings are no longer current. The formula for Yukon River Salmon has changed. The bag, name, and ingredients have all changed. Now it says “with salmon” which is lower on the ingredient list. There is Whitefish as the only meat in the first five ingredients. So say that so many dog food companies are now going cheap.
