Salmonella Concerns Recall Science Diet Dry Dog Food
Hill’s Pet Nutrition, Inc., of Topeka, Kansas, has announced that it is voluntarily recalling 62 bags of its Science Diet Adult Small & Toy Breed dry dog food because the food has the potential to be contaminated by Salmonella. The suspected product was part of a single production run and was distributed to 17 veterinary clinics and to retail pet store customers in California, Hawaii, and Nevada between April 24 and May 13, 2014.
Salmonella is a bacteria that can affect animals who eat the food. It can also affect humans who handle the pet food, especially if they don’t wash their hands thoroughly after coming in contact with the food or with surfaces exposed to the pet food.
People who come in contact with dog food contaminated with Salmonella should monitor themselves for the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever. In rare cases Salmonella can result in more serious symptoms such as arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. If you or a friend or family member experience these symptoms after coming in contact with the recalled product, you should contact a health care provider.
Dogs who have a Salmonella infection can become lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. In some cases a dog may only have a decreased appetite, fever, or abdominal pain. A dog may also be infected but not show symptoms. They can be a carrier and infect other animals and humans. If your dog has eaten the recalled product and has these symptoms, you should contact your veterinarian.

My two small breed dogs eat Science Diet. I bought a different brand today to start them on because they have been vomiting since January. They seem to switch up, one for a week or so and then the other. It usually is a pattern of 3 vomits per one event with it being one to two events per week. They had just turned 3 and 2 yrs old a couple months before and never had an issue with vomiting. They had been eating Science Diet for two years and I just couldn’t believe it would be the food, but after months of seeing them feel bad and be sick I am ready to try a different food. I have already monitored their treats and all things ingested (i.e. grass, mulch, household items etc.) . Now I wonder if there is a more prolonged issue than just these limited bags. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated!
I switched to hills mature adult formula several months ago. The dogs seemed to like it ok. However my oldest dog has been vomiting and has just been diagnosed with elevated numbers in his liver and an infection “somewhere” plus kidney stones and bladder crystals. The vet put him on royal canin urinary formula which I’m watching closely because I don’t like the ingredients listed. I’m now wondering if there could be a connection to bad food.
